Hi y’all! This is just a little worldbuilding project I’ve been working on the last few days. I don’t have much, yet, but I’ll be posting what comes to mind here as I go. If anyone wants to comment or pitch in ideas or ask questions please feel free
Cat Magic
- Nine Lives
- Potion Crafting
- Artifact Crafting (The act of Making and Naming a thing, or creature, a la magic staffs and cursed items and Familiar-type beings)
- Name Magic
Potion Crafting
Common Potions: Steady Sleep, Face Change (10 Minutes, color/pattern shifting), Shimmer (1 Minute, Invisible to 1 type of creature), Soft Breath ( Weak Cough Medicine, safe for kits), Wound Seal (Prevents bleeding out, apply directly to wounds, will dissolve after 1 hour), Warding (Circle around area to protect, lasts 1 season), Bubble Breath (10 minutes, Waterbreathing Potion, paste, apply to roof of mouth or tongue), Snake Oil (poison to apply to claws, do not ingest), Soothe Wounds (Weak Pain potion, cream or liquid, safe for kits)
Uncommon Potions: Deep Sleep (Keeps a cat in a deep sleep for up to 3 hours, used for more complex/time sensitive medical procedures), Fish Breath (1 hour, Waterbreathing Potion, paste, apply to roof of mouth or tongue), (More uncommon potions to be added later)
Rare Potions: (Rare potions to be added later)
Berries (Blueberries, Raspberries, Strawberries, etc.) are used as stains and fur dyes, completely kitten safe.
Artifact/Item Crafting
Why not have them make magic items that can float around telekinesis style? Ones that will return to you if you've lost them, too. Fishing nets that repair themselves overtime if given grass/kelp/string to use to bind the holes together.
Even though they don't have opposable thumbs their toes can move a little, and they can hold stuff between those toes and use their teeth and or claws of the paw to help with dexterity. or make tools like a floating needle for weaving/stitching. forging metal took a lot of trial and error because of the heat requirements but they figured something out with mud/clay and stone and stuff. first things made were probably long, so it could cool enough on one end for them to manipulate it with mouth or paws, and likely not very... distinct? Rough in shape, all metal that was just hammered with stones into the shape they want, and likely not pure metal yet cause they had to practice to get that stuff figured out. the heating and cooling and reheating required, etc. etc.
Worldbuilding
Pretty much every profession is valued, but things like foraging, hunting, and growing plants are seen as tasks for a profession rather than professions themselves.
Cats are meant to be more focused on the legacies they'll leave behind for the future and slow to make changes in their lives because they have 9 to do with what they need to before they pass.
Each cat has nine souls, with one spirit for every three lives they have. Upon losing your third and sixth lives, two of your three spirits will have broken away from your body.
There was once a time where every cat had only one life, until three groups of three came together to craft artifacts which would give every cat three lives, and with them, three spirits. But the other two spirits did not have a soul within them, so when these cats died for a first and then second time, those spirits would be left to wander the world as soulless, shadows of their once living whole.
So three cats, each of which having not lost a life, took the original artifacts, broke each in thirds and reforged them using one of their lives each. So that each cat may have now nine lives. Nine souls and Three spirits to hold them within their body.
The soulless shadowed spirits of ancestors past still wander the world, being "killed" and reforming wherever the light does not reach.
Soulless spirits are called faeries, or fey, for how they will trick cats into giving one of their souls, and thus one of their lives, so that the soulless may move on. Though other stories tell of them attacking cats instead, and taking the soul by force either by drinking the cat's blood or by a kiss or through using that cat's Name to wrench it free of the living cat's spirit.
