Is it possible for the task board to accept the requested items if you have them laying around in your den, or are players meant to bring freshly caught items to the task board?

It depends on what the task board is asking you. If it's asking you to collect something and you have that stashed in your den, then it should work. However, if it wants you to catch or forage something, then it wants you to actually catch it not pick it up from your storage.

I have tried picking it up when it says "catch" and it doesn't work. When it says "collect" you can pick it up from your storage. (I'm on switch so it may be different for you if you're on the pc version.)
