Perhaps for the demo, something similar to the pokemon let's go eevee/pikachu demo can be done? Perhaps instead of offering a portion of the full game, a special demo-specific scenario thing could be created? My idea is this:
Deep in the northern forest, a singular group of cats stands alone. They call themselves a colony, and have recently taken in a wandering cat who was abandoned by their mother as a young kit, and has been living alone for the past moons of their life so far. This cat is demo-specific, having a specific name and a specific pelt. There is a short in-game cutscene of the colony taking this cat in, before the player is allowed to play the game after the cutscene ends and the game starts after the player cat goes to sleep in their new den.
This colony is stern, and nobody seems to get along too well. However, the player can still go out into the forest (a demo-specific forest), get items, and give them to the cats to raise relationship with them. Doing this makes the cats less unfriendly, and more open to you. However, most still remain stern. The ranks of the cats in the colony are the same as one of the ones in-game. The shopkeeper sells items along with pelts, and introduces the player to customizing their appearance.
On the third day of the second (or first, depends on how long falcon thinks the demo should be) season, the colony guard reports a cat passing through the territory, and instructs the player to check it out with information on where the cat was last seen (which is where the cat is at, or around), as the colony isn't exactly the friendliest towards strangers. The player then goes to investigate the trespassing cat, which they will most likely do out of curiosity, even if they don't have to. (They will get scolded by and have a slight relationship drop with the guard if they do skip the interaction and don't report back to the guard, saying that the cat was found by someone else.) This cat, like Elli, will be a name-changing cat that can change your name for you, introducing the player to the function of cats outside the colony that offer their own services. (Coco, Elli, you know.)
After the player interacts with this cat, changing their name or not, they will report back to the guard and have a simple dialogue option of what they did to the cat. The player will be given a choice of what to say, the options being similar to: "I chased them off" or "I let them pass through". Saying you chased them off will raise your reputation with the guard, and saying you let them pass through annoys them, however, in response, the guard says "Well, they must've not been a threat if you let them pass through, so thanks for bringing that information back I guess."
A while passes, the player allowed to do whatever they want ranging from battles against rogue cats, tasks, hunting, selling, etc. However, if the player have five star reputation with a specific cat in the colony, that cat will ask the player to meet up with them in a specific part of the territory at midnight, no later than 1am. If the player does this, they will be talked to by the cat, and the cat will explain that there may be a way to leave the harsh colony they and the player currently live in, and will then detail the things they heard about the colonies that exist in the full game, as well as talk about who told them this, this cat being Coco.
They will then ask the player if they would like to go see if these colonies exist, and if the player accepts, the cat asking will say "Great, follow me," and will lead the player to Coco. Coco will then talk to the player and the NPC cat, before confirming once again if the player is ready to go, and if the player says yes, Coco will lead the player and the NPC off-screen, heading south, and the screen will then fade out to black and the demo will end, prompting the player with a different screen that says something along the lines of "I hope you enjoyed the demo! Go buy the game if you want more content!" or whatever.
Alternatively, if the player declines the NPC's offer, they will still get another chance to see, as they can go back and ask this NPC to initiate the midnight meeting again when they are ready.
Anyways, that's my idea for a demo.
(Also, as an addition to this, perhaps as an optional thing Falconstar can do, maybe they player could recieve a code at the end of the game that they can enter into cattails after buying it which lets them continue off on the storyline from the demo, with the NPC cat? It'll still start the same, but keeping the stats, upgrades, etc of the player cat, also starting at a different area in the north of the map. The NPC cat will also not go to the same colony the player goes to, if the player selects a different colony. Also, I know this is possible to do, as Wildflight, a user on scratch, coded in a way for the player to transfer the stats of their player character over to a different project of hers with a code given at the end of the game. Go ask her about it if you can!)
In terms of reflecting the actual game, the demo will have the following:
A colony with the same ranks and cat types as any other colony (guard, leader, healer, etc), battle quests, hunting and exploring the overworld, raising reputation with others via gifts, customizing your cat (even though it happens later on in the game), a storyline amidst the free roaming, and finding cats outside of your colony.
I think having all those will reflect the experience and functions of the main game pretty well, even if not including EVERYTHING the main game has (mines, other colonies, customization from the start, etc)
If you have your own additions, please comment them!
