Kitten numbers question

So, I know if you are going to have kittens with your mate and your spoil your mate every day you get 4.
So how do you just get one kitten? Iv'e had been trying to find out how you get one kitten for so long.
And what makes your mate have a certain amount of kittens?
I think if someone answered this question it would help a lot of other people.
