I really want to make custom furs for me and other people, but I can't figure out how to do it. Do I need to be part of some group or something, do I need an account, or is it easy and I'm just not smart enough to figure it out?

You can't make custom pelts anymore. Before the game was released, if you backed a certain amount on the kickstarter then you could make your own. The kickstarter ended when the game fully released though. I believe only fifty people were able to make their own pelt.
