How do you talk to/give gifts to other colonies when they try to fight you immediately? And how do you catch insects?

You can't give gifts or talk to NPCs that you see trying to fight you. You'll have to visit their camps and give gifts to their guards. At 25% reputation, you will be allowed access to the rest of their camp and you can talk to the other cats after that. At 50%, they'll let you use their services.
You catch insects by walking up to them and swiping your claws at them.

And at 75% you can join their colony

I've found that you can catch insects by attacking their shadow
