Hey guys, I just downloaded this game yesterday, and I think it was a pretty rad idea for a game. However, I'm not really sure what I'm supposed to be doing now that I've been left to my own devices. I've just been wandering around trying not to starve to death and failing, lol. Is there a questline I should be following? Anyone, in particular, I should be talking with to move things along? I'm just not really sure what to do next.

Did you leave off where Coco took you to one of the colonies? If so, Coco will return in a few days to check in on you. Coco will then prompt you to follow her to a secret that she wants to show you. I'll try not to spoil anything, but at the point, yes, you do have a story to follow.

There's lots you can do in Cattails. Try working toward some achievements. Find that special cat you want to have kits with. Give them gifts, increase your friendship with them, ask them out, marry them. Level up your skills, try out different active skills. Have fun exploring different parts of the Cattails universe, go collect gemstones in the mines, etc.
There is also a storyline you can follow. Coco will visit you and show you this. The storyline is not forced, though.

Cattails is fairly hands-off game. There are a handful of quests/activities in it but it's primarily an open-ended game. Survive the wilds, raise a family, and conquer the (game)world. More content is coming, at least in regards to having a custom colony (sometime in early 2018) and I'm sure some more stuff might make its way into the game to pad it out. There is some challenge in the game but many people add their own spin on the difficulty curve.
Some do a "vegetarian" run (only eating berries/plants), diplomatic run (cannot fight other colonies and only capture territory through diplomacy or other non confrontational ways), good neighbor run (similar to diplomatic run but the addendum that you must gain 100% rep with the other colonies), or you can go traditional and just try to collect EVERYTHING attainable (all pelts, one of every item, all expansions in your house, all Power Paws, etc.). The game can be played a lot of different ways, there is no "right" way.

Thank you guys! Good to know there's a quest line just to give me something to go on while I get acquainted with the game. I don't mind hands off games but when I have no idea what I'm doing it's nice to play a "quest" the first go round. Subsequent playthroughs I should know enough to just have fun with it! I'm liking it so far.

That's great to hear! Actually, one of the top complaints I've seen on here and elsewhere is that it feels too open ended. You're given a tutorial that helps you figure out the controls and the basics for survival (you gotta eat to live) but...that's it. Games, even sandbox ones, will often give you a few starter quests to help you get more acquainted with the nuances of the game while Cattails just kinda assumes that you'll land on your feet (paws?) and take off running. That's not necessarily bad but it can be rougher for some players.
It also doesn't hurt to maybe look at some gameplay from other players on Youtubers to get a feel for it if you're more of a visual learner.
