Mudwhisker watched in silence at the cold remark Frostcloud gave Smallstep. The small she-cat was going back to her den, probably trying to hide her annoyance. He decided to walk over to the group, try to make some conversation to grasp his attention. As he walked into the little chatting circle, Juniperheart was saying, "I can't wait to see those kits become apprentices. I want to be a mentor!" Frostcloud was laughing, not a cruel laugh, a happy one. "You'd be a good mentor." She told her friend. They all became silent when Mudwhisker stopped by them. "No, no. Carry on." He told them, and they didn't hesitate. Perhaps I should ask Yarrowtail how Smallstep was. I don't want to seem rude to my warriors, though. I'll just talk with them for awhile, then I'll ask.

Smallstep sat towards the back of her den. She just remembered that she had not got the chance to change her own nest. She wasn't even sure of Leopardpelt would have allowed her to if she tried. After a small shrug, she settled down into the dirt. Her mind ran wild with thoughts. Thoughts about Mudwhisker and her previous plot to escape. I think I have been doing fairly well, she thought, recalling how she had hardly lashed out at anyone today. Typically she would still lash out at everyone but Mudwhisker. However, she thought that her plan could be progressed quicker by biting her tongue towards others as well. After a moment of thinking, she decided that she would have to make an attempt to look better. Surely the deputy would never fall for a cat with such messy and dirty fur. The she-cat began grooming her long fur, cleansing it of grime. Cleaning her wounds made them feel better. Supposedly they wouldn't run risk of infection, according to Yarrowtail. She spent the next few minutes in silence, cleaning her fur and thinking.

(Sorry, was at school)
Mudwhisker eventually excused himself from the cats, telling them he had to ask Yarrowtail a question. Although Frostcloud stared at him with interest (or was it suspicion?), he quickly went to the medicine den. "Yarrowtail, I need to ask you something." He told the gray tom when he met with him. Mudwhisker asked how Smallstep was and was surprised to hear Yarrowtail say somewhat good things. The medicine cat did, however, ask why he was so interested, but he quickly told him it was for a report. Satisfied, Yarrowtail questioned him no farther and the two separated. Mudwhisker saw Bramblefoot playing with his kits as he walked over to Squirreltail, who he decided he would make conversation with for the time being.

(That's fine! Same here. ) Smallstep, now somewhat satisfied with her clean fur, pushed herself to her paws. Her eyes drifted to the squirrel that was slowly beginning to rot. She padded over and gently picked up the squirrel by the tail. Eating this would surely get someone sick. Not completely sure what to do, she was sure that she could give it to another cat to dispose of. The thought of being forced to eat it regardless crossed her mind. They certainly would do that if any of them thought of it. Sighing, she decided to take her chances. The small she-cat padded out of her den. The squirrel dangled from her jaws. There were no signs of Leopardpelt when she emerged from her den. Her eyes quickly scanned the clearing. The cats that were still conversing in the clearing were Juniperheart, Frostcloud, Bramblefoot, Squirreltail, and of course, Mudwhisker. There was zero chance of her approaching the two she-cats. Perhaps Bramblefoot. Though, she quickly took note of him playing with his kits. Remembering what Mudwhisker had said before, she hesitated. With a defeated sigh, she finally decided to give it to Squirreltail. Although she could avoid directly talking to Mudwhisker, he would still be right there. With slow steps, the she-cat began making her way over to Squirreltail and Mudwhisker.

The smile on Mudwhisker's face quickly disappeared when he saw Smallstep coming up to them with a rotten squirrel. He noticed her fur was groomed. Odd. He waited in silence, a hard look in his yellow eyes.

Smallstep finally reached the two toms. She glanced at Mudwhisker, but quickly fixed her gaze on Squirreltail. She lowered her head and set down the squirrel. "Uh, sorry to interrupt," she meowed, noticing a slightly annoyed look from Squirreltail. "I um, wasn't hungry one day, and by the next day the squirrel had begun to rot." Her ear flicked as she remembered exactly which day she was talking about. Even without directly saying it, she was sure that these two were aware as well. "I wanted to know if you could dispose of it for me?" she questioned, tilting her head slightly. "I don't want a kit or young apprentice to wander into my den and mistakenly eat it." Perhaps coming up with a valid reason would get her out of being forced to eat it anyway.

Mudwhisker sighed and gave a small nod to Squirreltail, telling him to dispose of it. The ginger tom nodded back, picked up the squirrel with a cold glance at Smallstep, and exited the camp. He watched as the warrior left before turning back to the small she-cat. He felt awkward, annoyed, and a few other emotions all at once. Eventually, he just said, "Well, why are you still here?"

Smallstep watched as Squirreltail left. She was beginning to grow used to cold and harsh looks from everyone. It didn't really even bother her at this point. When the tom disappeared out of sight, she shifted her gaze to Mudwhisker. He was just staring at her. She felt the tension in the air surrounding them. She figured it best to wait at least one more day before putting her plan into action. Possibly even longer. When he spoke she blinked, wondering the same thing herself. She offered a small shrug before turning and padding away.

Mudwhisker watched as Smallstep walked away. He waited for Squirelltail to come back, and once he did, they had a friendly conversation that lasted for an unexpectedly long time. He never realized how much he enjoyed talking to the warrior and decided he would have to do so more often.

(Sounds good. To any specific time or? We could skip a few more days to where Smallstep starts to put her plan into action?)

Smallstep padded across the clearing rather confidently. She was carrying a small mouse in her jaws. As much as she wished she had got to hunt it herself, she was merely being granted permission for a break to eat. A thought suddenly crossed her mind that sent her back to the fresh-kill pile. Her eyes scanned the pile for a moment. She grabbed another mouse, not seeing much else of interest. In her opinion, she had been doing a lot better. Of course the Duskclan cats still attempted to cut her down. Now and then their words would get to her, but she was getting fairly well at hiding it. She had finally seemed to get over the whole thorn situation. A snarky remark concerning it would arise from time to time, but for the most part the others had moved on as well. The she-cat moved away from the fresh-kill pile as Squirreltail began making his own selection. He shot her a glance, but did not question why she was taking two mice. She gave him a small nod before beginning to scan the clearing for Mudwhisker.

Mudwhisker walked in through the camp entrance. Bramblefoot and Frostcloud came in behind him. The three had gone on a border patrol together. Oakclan was still leaving sent markers, but he still had no idea why they hadn't even tried to come for Smallstep. It made him wonder if they had some sort of plan, an ambush maybe. Even if they did, Mudwhisker reassured himself they would be no threat. After all, they were just Oakclan warriors. He started to walk to the fresh kill pile when he saw Smallstep with two mice, waiting there patiently and scanning the clearing.

Smallstep turned her gaze to the camp entrance when she heard faint pawsteps. He saw Mudwhisker, Bramblefoot, and Frostcloud entering the camp. She waited as the other two cats went their own ways. There was no chance of her being flirtatious with the other she-cat around. When the coast was clear, she began slowly padding over to him. When she saw him turn his gaze to her, she stopped and hesitated. Well, he didn't look irritated. That was at least something. The she-cat continued padding over to Mudwhisker. She reached the tom and stared up at him in silence for a moment. Then, she dropped one of the mice at his paws.

Mudwhisker's eyes held the tiniest bit of shock within them. He stood there, quiet for a moment, contemplating the whole situation. He eventually stopped staring at the mouse and looked Smallstep in the eyes. "Thank you." He picked up the mouse by the tail. The only reason he could think of why she was doing this was to make amends. At least, that's what he hoped.
