Brightfrost hesitated before taking the last bite of vole. She was satisfied that at least she had gotten Jasminefur to eat a little bit more. He really did need his strength. She didn’t know exactly what they were going to encounter, but she was sure that they had many challenges ahead. And the first of those challenges was going to be dealing with nosy Clanmates.
Though, despite her acknowledgement of this, she was still somewhat annoyed when Jasminefur voiced his distrust of her Clanmates. At least he wasn’t accusing them of potentially hurting an innocent kit. She supposed it was pretty understandable that he would be worried about his own safety. On some level, he was still an enemy warrior. They probably hadn’t forgotten that they would have to face him in future battles. Although...Brightfrost wasn’t sure if there would be more battles between ThunderClan and WindClan if they weren’t able to find or restore the latter Clan. What would happen to Jasminefur if they failed?
Well, they wouldn’t fail. Brightfrost would make sure of that. “I won’t let any of them hurt you. If anyone tries to set a claw on you, I’ll make them regret it,” she said confidently. She stood as she finished eating, ready and eager to meet the day.
Outside the den, Robinpatch was arranging the dawn patrol; he warned all the cats involved to continue being alert for any dogs, and to come back for reinforcements if they encountered something they couldn’t handle.
Specklestar was just waking up, a bit earlier than usual; he poked his head out of his den and sleepily surveyed the camp. His gaze remained on the medicine cat den for a few moments before he hopped down and walked over to it.
“How is everyone?” he asked, though he seemed to mostly be watching Jasminefur. He looked to Autumneyes. “Are they well enough to leave your den? There are some concerns about our herb store.” His awkward statement was meant to mean that there were complaints about herbs being used for a WindClan cat.
Brightfrost looked to him. “We can get more herbs as soon as we can.”
“Well...you’ve got to stay with Jasminefur. I don’t know if he’s supposed to be leaving camp,” said Specklestar. “But we’ll certainly send someone.”

He probably wouldn't have commented on it even if he had noticed it, but Jasminefur didn't realize he had managed to annoy her with what he said; perhaps he just wasn't conscious enough that these were still her clanmates, or perhaps the danger he could be in was blinding him a bit to the reactions of those around him. Either way, the first thing she said was far from what he expected, and he stared at her like he was expecting her to burst out laughing from the funny joke.
But she never did, instead standing up with nothing but sincere determination reverberating off of her. As he sat silently staring at her, the sun started to slowly shift in its ascent towards sunhigh, casting rays through the brush and greenery that overhung the ThunderClan camp. The shadows outside the den began slowly peeling back into a warm orangeish glow, announcing clearly the arrival of the true day.
Maybe it was just how certain she sounded of herself, but Jasminefur didn't think she was lying. Despite how many cats might hop at the chance to rough with him a bit, and how outnumbered Brightfrost could find herself, she seemed utterly convinced it would play out how she said it would, and despite all logic pointing to her not winning such a conflict, it was strangely reassuring and he found himself swimming in a sea of gratitude. He partially lowered his mouth open to say something, some sort of thanks that wouldn't really communicate how her words had really made him feel, but he was quickly silenced.
The peeling shadows gave way to an almost fully lit camp, with some stray patches of brush shadow here and there; but outside the medicine cat's den was a brilliant and full brightness, which wasn't necessarily entering the den, but provided such a backdrop as he started trying to thank the cat, hushed as her yellow fur was surrounded by a swirling orange sun's glow which danced about with the moving of tree branches in what must have been a light wind high above them. It almost left her looking...divine, and his gratitude was quickly mixed in with some other feeling that he couldn't express--and ultimately, he just looked like a dumbfounded cat whose tongue was caught on ice.
Autumneyes couldn't tell exactly what was going on, but she could see that Jasminefur was left speechless by, well...something as the sun was coming out. Her first guess was what Brightfrost had said, a signal of her unending bravery that wasn't necessarily a sign of wisdom. If those were dogs trying to lay claws on Jasminefur, Brightfrost wasn't really going to come out of it okay just because her determination and bravery were sound and unwavering.
She didn't have a lot of time to think about what was going through Jasminefur's head, because Specklestar appeared through the sunlight backdrop, announcing himself and breaking Jasminefur's stupor.
A newborn kit would have understood what the diplomatic statement from Specklestar meant, and Autumneyes gazed back and forth between Jasminefur and Brightfrost for a while before responding. She already knew how her herb stores were--the two she had used yesterday were not well-stocked, and if there were dogs lingering about...
"I've been able to treat them both with more to spare. As you can see, Brightfrost is probably not in any danger from moving around camp. Her wounds weren't bad, but I still wouldn't send her on a patrol even if she didn't need to watch Jasminefur." Her eyes turned back to the WindClan warrior. "I'm changing his cobwebs pretty soon, so we will need more soon. And horsetail, oh, and chervil. If you could send a warrior out to get some, I can explain where they all can be found." She considered adding that she also needed to change Brightfrost's (much lesser quantity) of cobwebs to assauge any cat who was reluctant to search for more herbs, but being that a lot of cats probably blamed Brightfrost for him being here, Autumneyes held her tongue. "I'm not concerned about the stores, so you'll have to communicate that to them." Her gaze was fixed back on Specklestar's. That was a diplomatic way of saying "Your problem."

Brightfrost looked back at Jasminefur, her eyes burning with confidence. She did mean everything she was saying- when she really said she would do something, she was going to do it. And now she had a big promise to keep, both to StarClan and to Jasminefur: she wasn’t going to let anyone get in the way of that. Not the unknown enemies and not even her own Clanmates. And she cared about the two WindClan refugees. They had nowhere else to go; she wished that, despite the history between the Clans, ThunderClan would be a little more sympathetic.
She raised a brow as she noticed Jasminefur staring at her. She worried a bit that she had scared or upset him somehow. She supposed that the idea of more enemies potentially being after him might be frightening after all he had been through. But she knew that it was likely that he would see more blood spilled in the future; she wasn’t sure if she could shield him from that.
She listened to Specklestar and Autumneyes’ conversation. Specklestar nodded slowly as he seemed to try to commit the needed herbs to memory. He also asked about their locations so that he could tell the warrior he sent. “Well...I’m glad to see they’re recovering. Once Jasminefur is feeling a bit better, we’ll figure out a place for him to make his nest…” He glanced back towards the camp, as if his Clanmates’ angry eyes were on him. “...for the time being.”
Brightfrost watched Specklestar take a cat from the dawn patrol and send them to fetch herbs. She thought that was a good thing; she didn’t know how many herbs Jasminefur would need, since his condition still seemed worrying. She looked back to him. “How are you feeling, anyway?” She thought about his stare earlier. “Is there something you’re thinking of?”

It was a bit of a relief for Autumneyes when the leader didn't make a big deal of the herbs. She could have foreseen a situation where Specklestar made a bigger deal of the herbs she was using on the foreign warrior, and yet she found herself able to both keep the cats in the den and shift the work of collecting herbs onto other cats. What sort of luxury was StarClan bestowing upon her, and what had she done to deserve it?
"We can handle that later," She quickly interjected as the leader was glancing towards the camp and suggesting Jasminefur might find a place more normal for a warrior. "He's certainly not ready for that sort of question yet..." It was a question that drifted off into silence as Specklestar prepared a warrior to gather herbs for Autumneyes. The medicine cat tried to catch a glance of who exactly was going to collect them.
Long torn from his admiring stupor, Jasminefur wasn't slow to respond to Brightfrost's question. He began with a quiet sigh, surveying his own wounds and the wounds at his side that were certainly burning to some extent with every move. "I'm good," He lied, gazing at Brightfrost with a wide-eyed gaze with just a bit too much worry to seem normal. His ability to lie was weak and he came off like he was trying to keep her from worrying. Of course, he was trying to utterly bury the dumbfounded feeling he had been left with earlier, completely unable to define it himself.

The order to gather herbs was given to a young tom that Brightfrost had previously had disagreements with named Aspenpelt. He had once been Goldenspots’ apprentice.
“But that’s an apprentice’s job,” Aspenpelt complained.
“We can’t send an apprentice out alone when there are dogs running around. Go now,” said Robinpatch firmly. “If you see any sign of trouble, come back for reinforcements.”
Aspenpelt grumbled under his breath, “What a load of foxdung- running errands for a WindClan cat.”
“You’re not just running errands for them; the whole Clan needs herbs. Now go,” said Robinpatch.
“...you’re right. I’m sorry.” Aspenpelt left camp, seeming dutiful enough. Robinpatch watched him leave before sending out the dawn patrol with a flick of his tail.
---
Brightfrost frowned softly at Jasminefur, her eyes worried. She paused. “I know that it isn’t easy to show any weakness in front of a warrior from another Clan. But…” She wanted to tell him that they needed to trust each other- that they had to work together if they were going to save WindClan. “But...Autumneyes needs to know exactly how you’re feeling so that she can treat you properly.” She smiled a bit. “Maybe if you’re well enough to walk, we can get you acquainted with the Clan.”

It was too difficult for the medicine cat to hear what was being said, across the clearing as the other cats were. Still, it didn't stop Autumneyes from making a vain attempt to listen in from the mouth of the medicine cat's den, really only able to interpret expressions from the cats who were speaking--which really was Aspenpelt more than the clan deputy. She was certain that the warrior wasn't satisfied with the job he had been given, but she was turned about and facing the cats in the den before she could be seen listening in.
Jasminefur was left experiencing a weird sense of uncertainty as Brightfrost started commenting on what she saw as his inability to vocalize how he was feeling. The comment took him by surprise much as her previous comment had, but when she stated that Autumneyes needed to be able to treat him properly, the WindClan warrior drew back a little and turned away, feeling that something was lost between them, something he hadn't exactly realized had been created between the two warriors.
"I'm sure that I can walk around," It was a quiet meow from Jasminefur as he stared at the ground to his right side, focused far less on what was in front of him and far more on the question of what lie in store for him while he was amidst the ThunderClan cats. If he was asked, he couldn't have lied-- he was lost. When it came to any specific action, all he could think of was marching into WindClan's camp, to reclaim as much as he could, and he was already aware that that wasn't about to happen in his state.
No, he was doubtful he was going to be able to make the whole journey to WindClan today. Despite the sadness it was leaving him to feel, Brightfrost seemed to be ready to show him around the camp if he was in good enough condition. "Well, if you think I should see the camp..." He trailed off, slowly lifting himself up from his spot in the camp.
His gaze turned down to Fernkit, who seemed amidst a busy dream, twitching and mumbling to herself while the warriors were speaking. It kept Jasminefur from leaving the kit, as he remembered that he was supposed to take care of her.

Brightfrost was glad that she was able to convince him to get up and come out of the medicine cat den. She thought it would be good for him; she knew he was suffering and there wasn’t much she could do about that, but maybe it would be better if he had something to do instead of just laying in a den thinking about everything that had happened. She thought appreciatively about how Autumneyes- Autumnpaw, at the time- had sometimes given her little jobs to do when she was a kit. It had made her feel better to focus on doing something to help her Clan rather than just sitting in the nursery with her grief. This wasn’t exactly the same thing, but she hoped just stretching his legs a little would help somewhat.
And admittedly, she didn’t want to be cooped up here for another day. She felt like there was so much to do; she hated doing nothing at a time like this. She longed to sprint over to the WindClan camp and see what she could find- but she knew that would be foolish.
She looked down at Fernkit, also reminded of the little kit. She supposed they wouldn’t want Fernkit to wake up in the den with them gone. Though, she did also want to find a way to talk to Jasmsinefur alone so she could try and get more information out of him about the strange things she had seen in her dream. There were some things they needed to discuss that may not be best for the kit to hear, though maybe that would have to wait a while. “We can wait until she wakes up if you want. Maybe she’d like to come with us- or we can take her to spend time with the ThunderClan kits.”

Jasminefur's appreciation was clear as Brightfrost understood his concern for Fernkit. He was concerned about the kit being terrified as she woke up with not a familiar WindClan face around. They didn't have to wait for a very long time as the sounds of activity outside of the den were increasing, and along with the bright sun that would soon be giving way to dark clouds, rain, and potentially even snow, it was hard not to get a jump into the day.
That was, for cats whose clan hadn't been slaughtered. Jasminefur wasn't going to be appreciating any simple details like a nice, warm sun. When Fernkit started stirring in what seemed a relatively peaceful manner, the warrior gently licked the kit's fur down for a few moments to announce he was right there. She was startled by this, looking up at him and then around the den with a scared uncertainty. Then, her memories started returning to her about the day before and she pressed against Jasminefur's chest with a tired, quiet whine. It was all still real.
"Morning, Fernkit," He meowed quietly. What else was he going to say? He was glad she was alive and safe, but even saying that was just a reminder that so many other cats weren't. "Brightfrost and I...we're going to step outside and stretch our legs for a couple minutes. Do you want to walk with us? Or are you hungry?" He glanced outside the den for a couple moments, wondering if the ThunderClan kits would be up by now. "Or if you like, we can see if the ThunderClan kits are awake?"
Fernkit stared up at Jasminefur as her clanmate began providing her with options to spend her waking hours. She stared at him with an uncertain gaze, mumbling for a moment in response before she looked down at her paws. "I don't know." Her mew was quiet, and she didn't think any of the options sounded apetizing. What could after their last day?

Brightfrost wasn’t really sure what to say. She had never been good with kits, and this seemed like an especially delicate situation that she was not equipped to handle. She did think that Fernkit may be better off in the nursery than in camp with them, since she thought the kit may be stressed by meeting so many strange adult cats at once. Though she also figured Fernkit may want to stay with Jasminefur, so she didn’t really know what would be best. She hoped that activity in the camp would quiet again once the earlier patrols left; the dawn patrol was already heading out of the camp.
“Let’s get you a little food, and then you can decide what you want,” said Brightfrost. “I’m sure Thornkit and the rest are looking forward to getting to know you better.”

Jasminefur wasn't one used to handling the delicate youth of the clans, and he was a little lost for words when the kit just said she didn't know what she wanted to do. It made it hard to figure out what to do when Fernkit was indecisive and he was a poor caretaker.
So it was a relief when Brightfrost chimed in and set down a step for them to take. He nodded quickly in agreement. "Let's do that." No one was going to protest to feeding the kit, right?
Though Fernkit didn't seem particularly eager, she wasn't going to not follow Jasminefur when the choice was made, and soon the tom-cat was emerging from the den, Autumneyes staring at him with a wary gaze, her fur prickling while her imagination was sounding off about all the things that could go wrong. She prepared to follow them out of the den without saying anything.
Jasminefur got a fresh look at the ThunderClan camp, certainly not having paid any attention the day before. Looking around, he tried taking stock of how many cats were left, and he couldn't deny the warm comfort of the sun after awakening and uncurling from two other warm piles of fur. Feeling the nervous kit press up against his back leg as she looked around, unsure if a lot of cats were going to be looking at her, Jasminefur pushed at her back legs with his tail to urge her forward a bit. "I won't let anything happen to you," He murmured quietly, draping his tail over the kit's back. He must have said the right thing, because she joined him in looking at the full extent of the camp.
Jasminefur couldn't resist a stretch under the warm sun, even if a luxurious loosening of his muscles felt a little undeserved. He wasn't capable of a smile, but a quiet sigh, with a little bit of something like appreciation, escaped his lips. "At least it's warmer than alone in the den." He murmured absent-mindedly, not consciously emphasizing that his sleep must have been helped a little by having two warm cats near him through the night.
"Do you have rabbits?" Fernkit quietly asked.

Brightfrost smiled at Jasminefur’s comment. “It is a pretty nice day.”
There was still a little bit of residual excitement in the camp from all that had happened the previous day, but it had calmed somewhat as cats were obligated to focus on the different duties they were being given. Some chattering apprentices went off to do some training; their mentors had to usher them away to keep them from being distracted by the presence of WindClan cats in the camp. A couple of elders emerged from their den to soak up the sun; Specklestar was speaking to them amicably. Brightfrost thought they should steer clear from the elders; surely, they would remember a lifetime of battles with WindClan and be extra hostile towards Jasminefur.
As they approached the prey pile, Robinpatch didn’t seem pleased to see him either. Brightfrost was prepared to retort whatever he had to say, but she didn’t need to be. The old deputy allowed them to pass to feed Fernkit before grunting irritably and walking away. Brightfrost still wanted to say something about him being rude, but decided she shouldn’t start an argument in front of Fernkit.
“Sorry, it doesn’t look like we have any rabbit. The hunting patrol hasn’t been out yet; maybe they’ll find some.” Brightfrost picked out a leftover morsel for Fernkit. “If not, I can catch you one- whenever I can get out of camp.”
Quickbird walked across camp, on his way to see Fogfoot and their kits before he would have to go out on his patrols. He smiled to the three cats. “Good morning; did you all sleep alright?”

"Oh." Fernkit mewed quietly, the disappointment clear in the kit's voice. If it were Jasminefur, he would have used far more tact, but the young kit had no knowledge of such a thing, and it showed on her face as she looked at the prey pile.
Jasminefur had to hold back a sigh as Brightfrost promised to catch the kit a rabbit--that was, whenever she was let out of camp again. He was left feeling awkward as Fernkit bluntly sounded her disappointment, and though he felt like he should have said something about being grateful for the gift of fresh-kill, no matter what form it took, the tom-cat found himself awkwardly silent. It was difficult to tell Fernkit to temper her expectations after what they had been through.
But he did emphasize that she eat what was there. "Enjoy this gift from ThunderClan while it's there," He murmured quietly, acknowledging that, begrudginly or otherwise, the deputy had stood aside and the larger clan was providing this meal for Fernkit. "Because we never know when it will be gone," It was a dark meow from the tom-cat, probably something a little too dark for the kit to hear at the moment; subconsciously, it was likely that he was referring to more than the prey, but he didn't say anymore, leaving the statement where it was at.
He was pulled out of his darker thoughts as Quickbird approached. At first, he prepared himself for potential disapproval from the tom-cat at taking the morsel of food, but his raising hackles relaxed when the question that came was innocent, almost friendly.
Jasminefur was helpless to answer it, however. It wasn't exactly great to respond that his sleep fractured and unsatisfying, as any cat could take this as an insult on ThunderClan. Instead, he sucked in the truth and breathed out a lie. "I slept alright," He murmured quietly. "Thank you." He glanced at Fernkit, unsure if she was going to respond on her own or if she needed a nudge to be polite to Quickbird.
Though still disappointed about the prey, Fernkit seemed to register Quickbird's arrival and seemed to forget for just a moment and seemed to brighten just a little bit. After Jasminefur had responded, she simply nodded, more interested in what Brightfrost had mentioned than actually agreeing with Jasminefur. "Are the other kits awake?" She wasn't aware that he was just going to see them.
For the second time, Jasminefur glanced at Fernkit with alarm prickling his pelt at how direct she was being. If this was the wrong cat, that could get them in some serious trouble. They needed to tiptoe when it came to asking for things, and Fernkit was a bit young to understand that.

Brightfrost felt similarly concerned at Fernkit’s boldness, but soon relaxed. She did still feel firmly that her Clanmates wouldn’t do anything to hurt a kit and that Fernkit could get away with more than Jasminefur could, but she was aware that they were treading on fragile ground. Thankfully, it was Quickbird they were talking to. She figured he was about as fond of WindClan as most ThunderClan warriors, but his desire to look after the presumably-orphaned kit seemed to have overwhelmed his distaste for the Clan Fernkit was born into.
Quickbird smiled to her. “Yes, they should be awake now; they’re early risers. I was just going to visit them. Would you like to come with me?” He glanced to Jasminefur, seeming uncertain of his reaction.
Brightfrost looked to Jasminefur as well. She wasn’t sure whether he would trust ThunderClan enough to let Fernkit go- if she even wanted to. Brightfrost hoped that he would allow it, though; she thought that the kit getting friendly with various ThunderClan cats might help her in the long run. If her Clanmates could see her as a cute kit to be protected rather than a future enemy warrior, that would be beneficial to everyone.

After a night of sleep, even if the events of the previous day were still in the center of her mind, having other kits to play with was an appetizing idea to Fernkit, and Quickbird seemed to pick up on that this might be her intention asking whether they were awake. She was about to respond on her own and say she wanted to come with, but she realized as the ThunderClan warrior turned to Jasminefur that it probably wasn't up to her.
Suddenly, all three cats were starting at him, and Jasminefur glanced around at them with a bewildered expression. For some reason, they all thought he needed to give the okay, and although it seemed ridiculous to him, it hit him that, yes, he was the only WindClan authority to govern what Fernkit could do. This realization struck him in the heart, and it took him a few moments to recover as he gazed back down at the kit.
"Go on then," He murmured quietly, swallowing the bile in his mouth as he wished that her parents could be here as well. If his meow sounded reluctant, it wasn't at letting Fernkit off, as it might have seemed. "And offer them shares of the prey, too." He quickly added, glancing at Quickbird before nodding at the warrior, his eyes sparkling thanks that he wasn't able to voice right now. What he would give to have some cats to make friends of and play with, leaving the previous day behind for a bit...
Fernkit did her best to carry the prey, it being almost as big as she was, as she set off with a little more spunk in her step. She seemed to have taken to Quickbird rather easily, perhaps because she was the first cat to show her kindness here, and, well...he saved her from a dog.

“Good idea,” said Quickbird warmly at Jasmsinefur’s suggestion of having Fernkit share the prey. He nodded to Jasminefur before walking towards the nursery with Fernkit. He watched her closely, making sure that she could carry the prey- and that she didn’t stray too far from him. --- Brightfrost watched them before smiling to Jasminefur. She wished she could know what he was thinking. She assumed he was glad that the kit could spend some time with others her age and maybe have a nice distraction for a moment- but she figured there were probably negative feelings as well. As she thought about it, she wondered if he even wanted Fernkit to play with ThunderClan kits that he might perceive as lowly or dangerous. Maybe the reason he was suspicious of how Fernkit may be treated by ThunderClan was because he knew that a ThunderClan kit in a WindClan camp wouldn’t fare well. “She’ll be fine. The kits are young and gentle.”
She led Jasminefur away from the prey pile, not wanting to deal with Robinpatch at the moment. She began showing the brown to around the camp. “You know where the medicine cat den is. That’s the elders’ den over there- you shouldn’t need to go there. And there’s the warriors’ den...”
Goldenspots was just coming out of the den; he paused to warm his pelt in the sunlight. He looked to Jasminefur with a tight smile. “I’m sure you never thought that you’d be visiting our camp peacefully. I can’t say that any of us imagined this either.”
Brightfrost’s plumy tail twitched. She moved closer to Jasminefur, as if to claim him. “Only StarClan knows why he was brought to us.”
“Relax- I’m only making conversation. You can’t expect all of us to ignore the unnaturalness of this situation; I’m sure this WindClan fellow feels strange too,” said Goldenspots. “Besides, was it StarClan that brought him, or was it you and Stoneheart?”
Brightfrost was going to retort, but the sleek tom interrupted her to direct his attention to Jasminefur. “It is...interesting to meet you. I’m sure you’ll find your brief stay pleasant enough. I think you’ll find a better variety of prey here than in the moors.”
--- Quickbird poked his head into the nursery. His kits looked up with excitement. “Good morning. Fernkit’s come to visit- and she brought a mouse.”
“Hello, little one,” Fogfoot purred to Fernkit from her nest. As her kits went to see their father and the exciting guest, she seemed to readily accept the distraction that would give her a moment to relax.
Thornkit stayed behind his excitedly-chattering siblings. He smiled softly to Fernkit and spoke up after a few moments. “Hi...I’m glad you came back.”
