The warmth of the starry forest territory surrounding them was chilled by the cold voice that sounded from the warrior. "StarClan wills that there are four clans in the forest," As she said it, there was a note of bitterness that clearly sounded in her voice. It was hard to place why she sounded that way at first, as the unfamiliar cat's unsympathetic gaze swept over Brightfrost, up and down.
But...no. The starry mist surrounding them couldn't change the fact that this cat was, to some degree, recognizable. The dark brown pelt wasn't exactly distinctive, but as a waft of the familiar enemy clan drifted towards Brightfrost, it became clear this cat was a cat of WindClan, and uncertaintly not an old, unfamiliar one. Brightfrost would have seen this cat at Gatherings.
"A clan that believes they fight for StarClan may justify any crime," There was a slight hiss to the cats voice. "It is a wise cat who recognizes StarClan's will is greater than any one clan, and seeks to keep the peace and protect the four territories."
Keeping in line with the style of StarClan, the vaguely given advice seemed to echo through the air as the brown cat started to fade; and at the moment she was gone, the starry surroundings vanished from sight, not like the snow before, instead gone in a blip, like Brightfrost had blinked and awaken in darkness once again.
But a voice, quiet, yet stern, sounded in her ears. "No cat is immune to arrogance, and thinking their enemy is everything wrong with the clans. Measure your pawsteps carefully, and speak up when you must..."
After the cat's voice trailed off, there was a heavy sigh in her ears, like the same cat stood on both sides of her.
"Snapping jaws dare consume you; Enemies you don't know- Allies you thought you knew- And in your paws is the power to save every cat from them."
At the moment the voice ceased to speak, a flash of almost blinding light spread across Brightfrost's vision, and suddenly, a dark brown, massive dog appeared only two tail-lengths away from her, already closing the distance, and after only a moment its jaws closed around her neck, picking her up like she weighed nothing and shaking her violently; every sensation, the fear and the horrid pain of the dog's teeth felt as real as if she were in Thunderclan territory, and she had to experience it for almost five, horrid, awful seconds before the dream ended and the world around her suddenly jumped into resembling the ThunderClan medicine cat's den, the back of Jasminefur pressed against her side as he was curled around the WindClan kit, and, surprisingly, Autumneyes, not resting in any nest, curled against her other side.

Brightfrost worried that perhaps she had given the wrong answer. As much as she didn’t like to admit it, there was much that she didn’t always understand about StarClan’s will. She supposed she wasn’t alone; everyone seemed to have their own ideas about what StarClan wanted. Or perhaps this cat was right and everyone was only using StarClan in order to justify doing what they wanted.
She took in the appearance of the cat and struggled to remember her name. She thought back to all the Gatherings she had been to and all the cats she had met there. She felt a chill as she thought that the cat before her must have been a victim of the dogs. She understood that perhaps this cat seemed bitter towards her because Brightfrost was a ThunderClan cat. Did the tension between Clans hold even in StarClan? She wasn’t sure how she felt about that.
“I...I want peace.” She wanted to convince this cat that despite their differences when they were alive, they were on the same side now. She may be a warrior of ThunderClan, but her allegiance to StarClan was stronger. But the cat was gone before she got the words out.
She looked around quickly at the sound of the voice all around her. She was used to vague prophecies, but there was something about these words. Enemies you don’t know...allies you thought you knew…there really was danger all around them. Was there anyone she could trust?
She tried to hang on to the last part. She didn’t need to trust anyone else; she was the one who had the power to save everyone. She only had to look at the power within her.
But try as she might, she didn’t feel very powerful as the dog bore down on her. She yowled as she tried to fight the dog, but it was all for nothing. The dog was so much stronger, and she just couldn’t...she wasn’t enough. But she had to be. Try as she might, the pain overwhelmed her. The feeling was so harsh that it soon drowned out her thoughts and her determination.
Suddenly, she was jolting awake and standing up in the medicine cat den. She could still feel the teeth, even if it were only in her mind now. She panted and looked around. It was only a dream, and it was over; she was back in camp now. And Autumneyes’ comforting presence was there, and even the two WindClan cats were okay.
But it’s not over. Her thoughts raced as she considered what the dream meant. It’s only begun.

Brightfrost's unceremonious awakening disturbed Autumneyes' sleep, and almost immediately she was up (albeit dizzy and wobbly) pressing close to the warrior to check for signs of any wound she might have, even though she had no rational reason to believe the cat would have anything more grave than a thorn from the nest.
She took a step back after a few moments, as the warrior panted and seemed as panicked as Jasminefur when he had arrived. ¨Sweet StarClan, Brightfrost,¨ She huffed, though it was more from concern than irritation. ¨What is it? You half scared me to death,¨ She took in the expression on Brightfrost's face for just a few more moments, and then sighed quietly. ¨Nightmares?¨ It was barely a question, like she was already certain of the answer. She wasn't going to push anymore, though--it wasn't her place to question what exactly she had experienced, unless she wanted to share that.
But her eyes were burning with worry, and despite the fact that she was meant to be wise and respectful of StarClan's plan, she was young for a lone medicine cat, and she hated thinking about how hard it must be fro Brightfrost to have some special role and have no family to lean on as she dealt with it. Trying to hold back her frustration, she came closer and licked Brightfrost's fur down as best she could. ¨It's over now,¨

Brightfrost looked to Autumneyes, feeling bad for waking her. “I...I’m sorry for waking you. I...yeah, I just had a nightmare.” She was sure the poor medicine cat could use rest after all she had done. She quickly tried to appear calm so that she wouldn’t worry her too badly, though she wasn’t sure she did a good job. Her fur stood on end and her breathing was quick, though she started to relax at the feeling of Autumneyes’ warm tongue.
Part of her considered telling her everything. Medicine cats were trained in interpreting prophecies, after all. But her stubbornness and her desire to do things by herself took over. This was her responsibility; there must be a reason why StarClan gave the prophecy to her rather than to a medicine cat. And then there was that feeling that maybe she was only meant to trust herself; it felt like the cold was all around her.
She took a deep breath and looked to her. As much as she tried not to seem disturbed, there was a certain worry in her eyes. “Autumneyes, do you trust everyone in the Clan?”

Autumneyes' gaze flashed with deepening concern as the warrior said it was 'just a nightmare,' nearly provoking another huff that the medicine cat was just barely able to hold back. Brightfrost had looked terrified when she woke up, and the part of Autumneyes that wanted to push for information was only emboldened by the dodgy answer.
The strokes of her tongue paused for a time as she locked her eyes onto the other she-cat's eyes, and a quiet mew sounded without much emotion to it. ¨That must have been some nightmare.¨ It had really scared the cat's pelt off, and though her concern was obscured from her mew, her half-parted mouth and eyes wide with worry made it pretty clear.
She wasn't expecting too elaborate of an answer, but after a deep breath that foreshadowed something uncomfortable, the question Brightfrost asked threw her thoughts off balance. A slight tilt of her head accompanied by silence was the first response that Autumneyes provided, trying to dissect what could possibly have made her ask something like that.
Autumneyes knew that the warrior was never as comfortable as the cats around her--not as close to them as they were with each other. But the medicine cat didn't think that it was this bad--that Brightfrost might question whether some cat might not be trustworthy.
¨I...Uhh...¨ Her voice sounded the uncertainty which she felt responding to this question. ¨I would trust any of them to defend me out on the territory, and there isn't anyone who I...¨ How was she supposed to put this? ¨...feel wouldn't do the best for our clan.¨ Her voice had lowered down below the already quiet tone, into a hushed whisper as she spoke. The tilt of her head wasn't gone and her concern was expanding. ¨Brightfrost? Is there someone you're worried about?¨

Brightfrost felt a prick of fear at Autumneyes' uncertainty. She realized it must sound crazy- and practically sacrilegious- to imply that one of their own Clanmates might be some kind of threat. And she really didn't have anyone in particular she was concerned about. Everyone had always seemed so...normal compared to her. She had always looked down on them in some ways for that reason.
And surely they would do what was best for the Clan. But she considered what the StarClan cat had said. Cats would do anything and claim noble intentions, right?
She found herself going through her Clanmates in her head. She didn't always think Specklestar was a great leader, but he didn't seem like the type to hide anything. Stoneheart always felt secretive, but practically the only words out of her mouth were about the code and the Clan. And surely Autumneyes, who had always been kinder than she needed to be towards her and everyone, would never withhold some kind of evil plot, right? What about Robinpatch, Goldenspots, Rockleap…
She felt overwhelmed with the faces of her Clanmates going through her head. "No- I'm not thinking of anyone. I was just wondering about...how well I really know everyone." She flicked her ears. "I think I'm just a little frazzled from that weird dream. Thanks for being here." She attempted to get comfortable to lie back down, though she wasn't sure she'd be able to get back to sleep.

Autumneyes didn't say anything before Brightfrost had finished thinking and processing her thoughts. The warrior was really worrying her now, and with such a strong sense of empathy for others Autumneyes wasn't able to keep it from appearing on her facial features and she watched every move that Brightfrost made.
As the cat settled down, Autumneyes quietly offered to bring her a poppy seed if she wanted it. It was an almost absent-minded offer, while the medicine cat ran about her own mind trying to think of what could possibly lead to doubting any cats in ThunderClan. StarClan wasn't in the business of sowing discord and dissent, and even though Autumneyes knew that the warrior had a special role in StarClan's eyes, the medicine cat wasn't even certain if their starry ancestors spoke directly to the warrior--so what could have rattled her so much?
Autumneyes was feeling lost now, as Brightfrost thanked her for doing nothing. There was something going on in Brightfrost's mind, and she didn't want to bring it up to the medicine cat. Did that hurt Autumneyes, deep inside? Maybe...maybe it felt like having claws torn across her heart, to feel like the warrior was avoiding telling Autumneyes, of all cats, what was going on--but StarClan's will wasn't her right to know. It's not like I deserve this knowledge. Come on, Autumneyes. You can't let it bother you so much.
So why did it?
---
Jasminefur's sleep was awful. He managed to sleep through the remainder of the day, but as the hours after moonhigh arrived, he found his sleep thoroughly ruined, nightmares echoing the darkest thoughts of his mind, pronouncing his guilt in the WindClan disaster along with various other horrific images that, as he awoke, were repressed and unimaginable to him, despite all of the pain, terror, and guilt remaining as he returned to consciousness.
After a long time of horrible, awful consciousness, nothing more than his mind and darkness around him in the medicine cat's den, Jasminefur leaned a little closer in to the warmth that he had felt gently at his back, half-aware that it was a foreign warrior, and half not giving a rat's tail. Even a stranger, who might be his enemy again tomorrow, gave him some sort of comfort. The basic empathy she had showed him, perhaps--it lent to him an easier time closing his eyes. Horrifying images returning to him at times, but shifting between looking at the kit curling in close to him, and closing his eyes, repeating the cycle when he was plagued by more horrors, he eventually drifted into just a few more hours of sleep.
With a few StarClan-blessed hours of real rest, he started coming to when a cat, somewhat bristed and tense, settled down against his back. His return to the waking word was gentler and slower than Brightfrost's, but it didn't take too long, with him coming to what a somewhat confused meow as he struggled, for just a few short moments, to remember where he was.
Of course, the entire previous day came back to him pretty quickly, and with an exhausted sigh, almost as if he hadn't caught much of any sleep, he slowly shifted from on his side to on his belly, looking around the den with a weary sigh.
He saw Autumneyes first, whose eyes were on the WindClan warrior by the time he came to see her. Then his head turned to the right and came to Brightfrost, who looked pretty unsettled in his opinion, but he thought maybe she was a little startled to wake up where she was, right by a WindClan warrior. It might not have been anything more than that. With a downcast, quiet whine, he acknowledged that this was still the reality that he lived in.

Brightfrost didn’t take the poppy seed; she wasn’t sure she was supposed to be calm at the moment. Besides, their herb stores could be put to better use than for her nightmares. And...she felt guilty accepting help from Autumneyes when she was hiding something from her. She really didn’t want to hurt someone who had always helped her, but...she at least needed time to think about it before involving anyone else.
Before she could reconsider, she noticed Jasminefur waking up. She felt annoyed that she had apparently woken up two cats now. She hoped that Jasminefur would be able to go back to sleep somehow; she assumed it was difficult for him to fall asleep in the first place. She briefly considering asking him about the two white cats and the brown cat, but she figured that it was a bad idea to force him to think about his dead Clanmates while he was trying to sleep.
Without thinking much about it, she pressed lightly into Jasminefur’s side in an attempt to comfort him as if he were a regular denmate. Her fur was soft and plush. “Sorry if I woke you- I just had a weird dream. Everyone should...go back to sleep.”

The medicine cat could see without much effort the wide-eyed and haunted look that remained on the face of the WindClan cat even as Brightfrost did her best to show a gesture meant to comfort. He wasn't oblivious, though; just half-lost in dreams, Autumneyes imagined, much like Brightfrost. He turned towards her a bit, her plush fur pressing against his shorter-threaded brown pelt and leaving him with a strange sensation, and as he was about to mentally investigate it, he was stopped by Brightfrost speaking up.
Jasminefur was aware to some extent that the cat returning to his side had guided him to a sooner awakening, but he hadn't noticed the bristle to her pelt at first--now, when she spoke up, he became more aware of it both in her pelt and something of a note he detected in her voice. She almost sounded irritated or annoyed, but what about he had no idea. He decided it was better not to say anything in response, even if he felt like getting back to sleep wasn't something he could do now that he had been stirred.
The light was peeking through the horizon and starting to give brightness to the world, which meant it was still very early. Autumneyes sighed quietly as her gaze stayed fixed outside of the den, and without saying anything, after a few moments she approached the mouth of the den, peeking her head outside to see if anyone was around. Her guests couldn't really move around until Specklestar was awake and gave the okay, but if no one was awake yet, she felt it might be wise to hurry out and rush to get some herbs now, and not risk them getting harrassed later in the day without Autumneyes there.

Stoneheart was on guard duty; she sat at the entrance of the camp. Though her focus was on watching out for anyone entering the camp, she often glanced towards the medicine cat den as if there were a potential intruder there. It was obvious that having a WindClan warrior in the camp was putting her on edge.
It seemed like all the other cats were in their dens; the dawn patrol hadn’t started to gather. Robinpatch would likely be awake to arrange patrols soon, but not yet. The camp was mostly silent, besides the occasional stirring of sleeping cats and the murmuring of a couple gossiping apprentices from the apprentice den who seemed excited at the prospect of fighting a dog. Specklestar was deeply asleep.
Brightfrost seemed to know that she wasn’t going to be getting back to sleep either, but she stayed in the nest beside Jasminefur anyway. At least she wouldn’t be on the dawn patrol today; she couldn’t think of doing something as menial as that when she had such important things to think about. She looked to Autumneyes and followed her gaze. “What are you looking for?”

Autumneyes was too busy boring her gaze into the pelt of Stoneheart to respond to her patient. She was mulling over how much of a risk it was to leave with Stoneheart being awake. The cat was nothing if not loyal to the code and the word of the leader. Stoneheart wasn't particularly likely to do anything horrible to the WindClan cat. Perhaps she could risk it...
But on the other paw, Autumneyes could definitely imagine the cat taking the chance to chew out Brightfrost, though the medicine cat was a little less familiar with Stoneheart's mostly silent judgement that Brightfrost knew better. With a quiet sigh, Autumneyes turned back around from the exit of the den, stepping back into the middle of her home and shaking her head. "It's early, so you'll have to wait a bit for the patrol to go hunting and return. Or, at least, until Specklestar wakes up and..."
Her gaze drifted to the two warriors and the thankfully still-asleep kit. "Actually, I don't really care..." She quietly mumbled, more to herself than to the other cats. It was Brightfrost she was talking about, and more than any other ThunderClan cat, Autumneyes was the least likely to leave the young warrior starving. And, well, if she got something for Brightfrost, they might as well share it so the Windclanner wasn't starving. She turned around again, stepping out of the den and making her way to the fresh-kill pile without saying anything to the other cats. She wasn't worried about anything happening in her den in the time it took her to walk across camp and back, and soon she was back at the den with sizeable vole.
When she entered the den once more, she brought the vole over to Brightfrost. "You'll have to share. And don't make a big deal of it--we don't want to wake Fernkit up, or let the whole camp know a WindClan cat is eating before them." She blinked, looking at Jasminefur. "Sorry, but..." She didn't mean to sound judgemental, but...a number of cats were likely to react poorly if they found out. "Just...don't talk about it."

Stoneheart looked at Autumneyes with a steely expression as she took the prey. She figured what the prey was being taken for, and the idea of a WindClan cat eating before ThunderClan didn’t sit well. However, it seemed that she wasn’t going to openly question the medicine cat’s authority- and she really wasn’t the gossiping sort, so hopefully all of ThunderClan wouldn’t know about this.
Brightfrost watched Autumneyes, feeling grateful for her friend. As the fear from the dream wore off she found that she was quite hungry; it had been some time since she had eaten last. And she assumed that Jasminefur was quiet hungry as well, though she wasn’t sure if he would be able to choke prey down today, since he hadn’t seemed to have an appetite previously. “Thanks, Autumneyes. You’re the best.”
As she glanced to the opening of the medicine cat, out into camp, she did start to feel guilty as she thought of the meal. She hadn’t hunted or done any patrols today- but she supposed she was doing her current responsibility, which was guarding Jasminefur. Speaking of the tom beside her...was it really okay for a WindClan cat to eat before all of ThunderClan had been fed? The first hunting patrol hadn’t even left yet.
But...Jasminefur needed to eat. She was sure StarClan wanted her to look after him in some way. And besides, it wasn’t leaf-bare yet; prey was still relatively plentiful. The hunting patrols would come back with enough for everyone.
She tried to ignore the guilt as she took a bite of the vole. “Our Clanmates should mind their own tails.” They certainly didn’t know better than her or StarClan or a medicine cat. The rules needed to be broken- for the greater good.
She waited for Jasminefur to have as much as he was going to eat before speaking again. If he had an appetite, she didn’t want to ruin it. Eventually, she did ask a question that had been on her mind since the dream, “What does your family look like?” She thought of the dark brown cat in her dream; Brightfrost thought she resembled Jasminefur. She hesitated, not sure if he would believe that someone who hasn’t a leader or a medicine cat was having dreams of StarClan. She had been met with some disbelief in the past. “So that we can keep an eye out for them at the next Gathering.”

"Yes, I am. Now eat something," Autumneyes bestowed a quick nuzzle upon Brightfrost, there and gone before the warrior could blink, and then the medicine cat was turned back around and padding back to her herb stores. She just wasn't comfortable leaving Brightfrost to fend off any potential pains that might come along to give them trouble. So be it...Jasminefur was going to have to deal with less frequently changed cobwebs. He didn't seem to be in dire pain, thanks to StarClan, so she didn't think it would be a problem leaving him until she could send a warrior out to get herbs.
"I'm too busy making sure these two are okay...I just can't spare the time out of camp." She suppressed the thought and gave a quiet giggle which would have seemed out of nowhere to every other cat in the den, but she quickly suppressed the idea of what to say. It wasn't like these two were dying. No, even if it made her laugh, she would probably have to be more diplomatic, despite how badly she wanted an easy day in the den.
Autumneyes and Jasminefur both turned to the young warrior as she suggested her WindClan clanmates get their noses out of what was going on here. Autumneyes gave something of a sigh while nodding in agreement, while Jasminefur was a little surprised and was left trying to read whether this was frustration or something else in Brightfrost's voice--but he was left without an answer, unable to read the cat's closed off face as she took a bite of the vole.
Uncomfortable with having the majority of the prey, Jasminefur silently passed it back to Brightfrost after one small bite, clearly not about to devour the vole himself. Autumneyes watched him with disapproval, though she wasn't saying anything yet.
Jasminefur seemed unprepared for the sudden, surprising question, especially so early after being awoken.
He started gazing at her intently after she made it clear she wanted to know what features to keep an eye out for. There was truly nothing else he wanted more than to discover that his father and sister had made it out okay, so he thought of the best descriptions he could for them.
"Well...they're big, strong cats...My father, Poppypelt, well...he's orange with a lot of black spots, like poppyseeds...and, umm...Rosepelt, my sister, she...she is dark brown, a darker brown than me, and...well, her eyes are dark green, like mine." He bit his lip, looking away as clear images of his father, mother, and sister resounded clearly in his head. He wanted nothing more than to see them right now.
Not knowing Brightfrost might be particularly interested in hearing a description of his mother, he left her out. He knew she was dead--what did it matter? Of course, until mentioning the green eyes that the siblings shared, Jasminefur's sister did almost sound like the cat Brightfrost had seen. It seemed to be strongly pointed to someone who was related to Jasminefur.

Brightfrost listened closely to his descriptions and tried to remember what the cat looked like. Thankfully, most of the dream felt like it had been burned into her mind. She had thought the cat could have been his sister, but the eye color was wrong. She supposed it was good that the cat didn’t match the description of Rosetail or Poppypelt; since she hadn’t seen them in StarClan, there was a chance that those two were alive.
She noted that Jasminefur didn’t mention his mother. If Poppypelt didn’t seem to look much like either him or his sister, then perhaps Jasminefur and Rosetail took after their mother. It would make sense if Jasminfur’s mother was the one who had spoken to her in her dreams; wouldn’t a mother want to watch over their living kit as much as possible? Brightfrost had never really confirmed it, but she was sure that Icestorm had been looking after her as much as she could.
What would Jasminefur think if she told him that she had seen his mother in a dream? He probably wouldn’t believe her, right? He might think it was some sort of weird ThunderClan trick. She would wait a little while and build some trust between them- though she hoped he was already starting to trust her a little after convincing Stoneheart to let him come back to camp.
“We’ll do our best to find them; they could still be out there,” said Brightfrost gently. She pushed the last bit of vole back to him. “You should eat more- we’ll both need our strength for…” It occurred to her that she shouldn’t openly talk about her quest in front of Autumneyes, who would potentially worry about them running off to WindClan’s camp. “For meeting so many ThunderClan cats; they can get pretty feisty.”

It would have been eager to linger on the subject for too long, and the problem it was all Jasminefur wanted to think about--getting the rest of his family back, and he would of let the subject stay put if it wasn't shifted by Brightfrost, urging him to eat more after assuring him they were still out there. His want to hold the conversation manifested in an uneasy expression as he started kneading the nest under him. Still, meeting ThunderClan cats was another subject that was certainly important, something that he needed to get right as a stepping stone to getting back to the WindClan camp and trying to round up and survivors.
Thought his stomach wasn't asking him for food, Jasminefur felt that it likely would be quite a while beforehe had another opportunity to get a meal under the watch of the fesity ThunderClan warriors. Sighing and acqueiscing to what she had said, he stooped to taking just a little bit more than his fair share of the fresh-kill, even though it made him feel guiltier all the while he was doing it.
"I'm not so sure that I'm going to be really...safe," he mumbled quietly, thinking about what one cat could really do to stop a number of angry THunderClan warriors from ripping him into rat-tail sized shreds. It could have sounded insulting, but he really didn't mean it like that; it just seemed like an obvious reality to him that cats who would happìly tear him apart far outnumbered those who wouldn't.
After scarfing two bites of the prey down, he quietly pleaded for her to eat more of it as he pushed about the remaining fifth of the vole back to her, feeling he had already eaten so much more than he deserved for doing absolutely nothing right.
