Brightfrost slowed once she noticed that Jasminefur’s injuries were catching up with him. She wasn’t especially knowledgeable in medicine and didn’t know exactly what the extent of his wounds were, but she thought he was lucky to still be walking at all after a close encounter with a pack of dogs. The one dog they fought was fierce enough; she couldn’t imagine dealing with enough dogs to decimate a Clan.
She looked to him sadly as he brought up the other WindClan kits. She hoped he was wrong- maybe some other cats had managed to escape the chaos without him noticing, and maybe they had brought kits with them too. But she knew that even the most optimistic scenario she could imagine was still rather bloody. “At least you saved Fernkit,” she said softly. “And...maybe you aren’t the only survivor.”
She thought about the ThunderClan kits back in camp. They didn’t have many at that moment, so the ones they had were especially valued. She felt sick as she thought about what would happen to them if the camp were attacked. She supposed she could understand what Stoneheart felt was at stake. But she didn’t think Jasminefur would be hurting any kits, and they couldn't leave him- just in case, though, she would watch him closely.
Just as she started to worry about what the rest of the dogs would do next and whether ThunderClan was safe, she could tell they were nearing the camp. Everything sounded relatively peaceful, though Brightfrost figured that there would be some excitement from Quickbird showing up with a strange kit and dire news.

Jasminefur was enraptured within his own mind; of course, he meant what he had said as a genuine warning, but only he knew that for certain. He didn´t take particular notice of their slowing pace, really only subconsciously slowing to match her pace while his wounds gradually grew more taxing.
´At least...´ These words sounded in his head as Frostbright spoke to him. She was trying to reassure him, and that was more than he had been told to expect from a ThunderClan warrior. Still, it wasn´t helping him much. ´At least´ was what one said when when they didn´t do good things. He recalled his own words from his apprenticeship, ¨at least i caught a mouse.¨ A go-to to deflect the disappointment of a superior. Maybe she wanted him to feel better, but there wasn´t a word in the world that could erase the cold stare of his mother from his mind, or the thought of how many cats he left behind.
Jasminefur thought hard back to everything he saw in the camp, despite how horrendous it was to do so. There was one cat he didn´t remember seeing in the camp, and he needed to recall if there was any cat that looked like her. He couldn´t entertain Brightfrost´s attempt to give hope to the situation for too long, but...he hadn´t seen his sister.
¨Rosepelt. My sister. I...I didn´t see her in camp...¨ It was a quiet mew, empty of hope or any other emotion. Yet, there was a tiny little part of him that was praying to StarClan that he hadn´t missed her, that she had been outside of camp. He hadn´t really grappled yet with the fact of his entire clan being gone, but encountering the possibility of his sister surviving held the potential to save him in many different ways.
Jasminefur certainly wasn´t talking like he was a typical invader, and as they drew towards the camp all of his attention focused immediately on the kit he had carried through the whole of his territory. ¨Ïs Fernkit going to be okay? Are they going to skin her alive? She´s from my clan, I--will they only see my clan in her?¨ There was just a little bit more energy in the young warrior than when he had spoke before. Something about the kit worried him a lot, and kept him focused on her wellbeing, making him leave behind, if just for a pawful of moments, the chaos that he claimed had occurred in the WindClan camp.

"If you didn't…see anything happen to Rosepelt, then surely there's a chamber she survived," said Brightfrost softly. "Surely you're not the only one who made it out."
Her fur puffed up in irritation as Jasminefur started fretting about Fernkit's safety in her camp. Even if he had reason to be protective after all that had happened. "We're ThunderClan, not a den of foxes. None of us is going to hurt a kit, even from another Clan. We follow the warrior code," she said with a flick of her tail. She again wondered if insisting on bringing Jasminefur to camp was such a good idea, but she was too far now.
She entered the camp, still trying not to aggravate Jasminefur's injuries as she brought him through the entryway. Those who were in camp were aware that something was going on, even if they didn't know what. Quickbird was by the nursery with Fernkit, who had not been harmed.
As Brightfrost's peers turned to look at her for an explanation as to why she had a WindClan cat leaning on her flank, she found herself at a loss for words. She looked to Stoneheart, hoping for some help, but received nothing but a silent stare.
However, she didn't seem to mind being the center of attention and she still looked confident. "We found this cat injured. He- saw what happened to WindClan."

Brightfrost might have been trying to provide a dose of optimism to make the cat feel better about what had happened, but he could only believe that it was wishful thinking, and he couldn´t find a response that conveyed the depths of fear that would leave him to doubt what she said.
Even if he could find something to say, he would have held it back as he felt her fur fluffing up against his flank as they were crossing the last distance before the camp. He flinched at the sharp tone in her voice when she spoke, and he noted that he wasn´t going to be able to voice his concerns with her. He felt it wasn´t inconceivable that ThunderClan might not treat the kit well, when he had been taught that they had been warring with WindClan for several times as long as he had been alive--but Brightfrost seemed to take it as an attack on the clan, and he didn´t want to aggrivate her like that again. Especially when she was one of two cats, and likely only one of many, who had wanted to bring him back.
So he left them in silence as they finished the journey and entered the camp. Uncertain how to handle the sudden sea of foreign cats, who faced him as they moved through the barrier that separated the cat from the outside world, Jasminefur instead turned about looking different way until his eyes fixed on Fernkit and the warrior who had carried her here. A third cat was with them, sniffing at Fernkit, with an unused patch of cobwebs by one paw.
He sucked in a breath as he saw Fernkit was pressed against the ground, trembling as a cat was pressing their nose against her while a dozen or more others had been murmuring about her since she got here. Once he had seen this, the rest of the cats seem to fade out of his notice, and he pulled himself off of Brightfrost´s flank and, grunting in pain with the effort, started trying to make his way to Fernkit.--- It was a relief to see that the kit was not injured; if Quickbird and the others had encountered a dog, the kit could have been killed with one bite or one paw, and the medicine cat would never want to see something like that. She sighed quietly as she saw the state of the kit, probably caused in part by her focus on checking for wounds without slowing down to make sure Fernkit knew she wasn´t a threat. ¨I´m sorry dear, but i needed to make sure you weren´t hurt. I´m not going to hurt you, okay? I promise. And if anyone does, you come tell me, and I´ll take care of them.¨
Autumneyes turned away when she heard the voice of Brightfrost, and she missed the uncertain look that Fernkit gave to her after she had finished speaking. She saw quickly the cat that was against her side, and after a few moments Autumneyes started approaching, just as Jasminefur seemed to take note of Fernkit and left the side of Brightfrost.
¨Brightfrost, get him into my den.¨ Her honey-sweet voice clearly dripped with worry, both for the cat himself and for the implications of what the dog could mean...and what Quickbird was reporting the cat had said. For now, she had one thing she could do.
¨All of you, go away,¨ Autumneyes gave a blanket, sweeping glance across the camp, before turning back to Jasminefur to make sure he was going to get to the den. ¨She can explain after I´ve seen to his wounds.¨
¨And Quickbird,¨ She turned back to the warrior for a moment. ¨Would you bring the kit in as well? I don´t want her getting swarmed out here.¨ The leader could wait a few minutes to question them.

Brightfrost looked to Autumneyes gratefully. At least the medicine cat was sort of on her side- at least enough to look after Jasminefur’s wounds, as she had hoped. She began walking into the den, sparing a glance to the cats that were reluctantly going back to their business despite their intense curiosity. Stoneheart went to speak with Specklestar, who was peering curiously out of the leaders’ den. Brightfrost spoke to the medicine cat, “He did pretty well fighting the dog, but he got weaker while I was bringing him here.”
Quickbird shared a word with a cat that seemed like his mate before he gently brought Fernkit to the medicine cat den. He stayed nearby, outside the entrance, still seeming to feel responsible for the kit. Brightfrost was glad that not all of the warriors had left them, since she still felt like she had to watch Jasminefur and didn’t want to do so alone if things got bad. Autumneyes might not be a kit, but she still wanted to look after her.

A medicine cat had two main duties, first to counsel and convey the messages of StarClan to the leader; the other was to heal. Autumneyes´ job was not to participate in the generations-long conflict between ThunderClan and WindClan, it was to heal the injured. Nine out of ten times, these would be ThunderClan cats, but this cat was heavily injured by a dog, and if even a part of what Quickbird was reporting Jasminefur had said was true...She had no doubt Jasminefur deserved every herb.
¨Any cat ought to feel terror at facing a dog, but I can see Jasminefur is no ordinary warrior.¨Her praise rang with an intent to comfort him amidst the chaos that had taken to everything in his life. ¨And you too, Brightfrost. You did remarkable to come out of that so well I´ll patch you up just as soon as I get this poor tom situated.¨ He clearly had suffered more.
In particular, a bruise that was continuously growing a deeper shade of purple was concerning her. It seemed he had suffered some kind of heavy blow to his head, and Autumneyes didn´t like that. That wasn´t something an herb could heal; only time.
She went about patching the deep claw wounds first; thanks to StarClan, the warrior hadn´t been bitten by the dog--that would have been grave. Her paws flowed through the process like magic, and three or so minutes passed and Jasminefur was sat in a nest with patched wounds. ¨You aren´t going to be able to move from here most of the day. You need to rest.¨
This didn´t sit well with Jasminefur, and he immediately took to protesting. ¨I need to get back to WindClan! I...I need help saving my clan! The dogs are still there, and my clan needs help!¨
Autumneyes bit her lip, starting to feel tormented as Jasminefur seemed to confirm what Quickbird had reported. She choked on her own words, unable to say what was running through her head. If there were as many dogs as Jasminefur seemed to suggest...enough to assault a clan...how many cats were left to go back for?
She felt paralyzed as the WindClan war sat staring at her with desperation. She needed to treat Brightfrost as well, but the tom-cat was obviously awaiting for an answer from the medicine-cat. She wasn´t knew to this, but Autumneyes wasn´t a senior who had encountered every situation a medicine cat ever would. She was struggling with the truth of the situation, and the awfulness of really saying it. ¨You can barely move on your own, and if you reopen those wounds I guarentee you they will get infected.¨ She might have been exaggerating a bit; she had paws blessed by StarClan meant to fix these wounds, and Jasminefur´s weren´t truly dire--but they still needed to sit and not be reopened.
¨Let me take care of Brightfrost´s wounds, and then we can talk about WindClan. I think Specklestar is going to want to know what is going on, and we can figure out a patrol from that point. Brightfrost, come here.¨ She ordered from beside the WindClan warrior, turning to pad a few short steps to her herb supply.

Brightfrost watched Autumneyes’ reaction to what Jasminefur was telling them. It did sound dire- not only for WindClan, but for all the Clans if there was still a pack of monstrous dogs roaming the territories. Her mind lingered towards the battles she had fought against WindClan; it was strange to think that they could be taken out by a freak occurrence like this. Something about it didn’t feel right.
She thought back to the dream she had had that morning. She remembered the wind rushing through her fur. This must be what she was supposed to be looking out for.
She looked to Jasminefur with a renewed, fiery confidence in her eyes. “Even if I have to scout WindClan’s territory on my own- we’ll figure this out.”
She padded over to Autumneyes. Brightfrost had been trying to ignore her own wounds. A cat like her shouldn’t be bothered; she wanted to be the sort that could shrug off any attack. But she did have some injuries that needed to be tended to- they were nothing major, but could potentially lead to an infection.

Autumneyes gave a deep sigh as her clanmate gave a solemn promise to solve the entire problem on her own--it shouldn´t have surprised her, given how knowably confident Brightfrost always was. But even as she knew that StarClan had special plans for Brightfrost, a great roll than most the ThunderClan cats, she couldn´t help but worry about the cat´s overt overconfidence in the face of a pack of dogs in the territories. ¨You´ll do absolutely no such thing,¨ Autumneyes mewed sharply, brushing her cheek warmly against Brightfrost´s. ¨Too many cats would be devastated to see you get hurt.¨ She murmured in a much quieter voice.
With her mother dad and lacking a known father, Brightfrost was a cat who garnered deep pools of sympathy from the medicine cat, and she imagined from many others as well. With a young 30 moons, Autumneyes was plenty senior to her, but she had still been considered a young warrior when Brightkit had suffered tradgedy, and as an apprentice, Autumnpaw quietly strayed out of her duties to make sure the kit was growing okay. To see her throw her life away at the paws of a pack of dogs would be devastating.
Jasminefur stared at Brightfrost with a slightly parted maw, trying to figured why and how Brightfrost felt so surely that she was going to see this problem through--he thought back to only minutes ago when she was irritated at him for his assumption that Fernkit could be in danger, and yet now she was promising that she, herself, was going to check out WindClan´s disaster. It seemed contrary to the unknowing tom, and he was left in silence as Autumneyes lightly lectured the she-cat about the danger.
¨Now, sit still while I take care of these,¨ The medicine cat continued on, starting to apply a poultice of horsetail with a touch of oak leaves as a preventative against infection, then quickly plastering cobwebs over the non-fatal, but non-insignificant wounds on the she-cat. ¨Now you,¨ She murmured as she was beginning to finish up with the cobwebs, ¨I imagine Specklestar is going to make you watch Jasminefur anyways, since you brought him in.¨ She giggled quietly. ¨Perfect for me, because I can make sure you aren´t aggravating your wounds like you always would when you were younger.¨

Brightfrost ignored Jasminefur’s confusion; she didn’t need him to understand her. She was used to this sort of reaction, even from her Clanmates. However, she softened as she listened to Autumneyes. She hadn’t forgotten the medicine cat apprentice’s kindness as she learned how to grow up without a mother to look after her. She twitched her whiskers as she remembered the scrapes she got herself into when she was an apprentice. She could still remember waiting impatiently for Autumneyes to give her the clear to get back to her duties, as Stoneheart sat stiffly near the medicine cat den.
She needed to do this, but she didn’t want to upset the kindly medicine cat any more than she needed to. “Yeah...I brought him here, I’ll look after him.” She meant that both ways: she did still want to make sure he was cared for well enough, but she also wanted to make sure he didn’t cause any trouble. She paused. “But if Specklestar doesn’t want to send a patrol...we can’t just do nothing, right?”

Autumneyes didn´t doubt the word of the warrior for a moment, and she smiled as she turned about to glance at her herb stores. She had only used cobwebs and a couple herbs to prevent infection, but Leaf-fall wasn´t going to be around much longer, and she needed to make a point of getting an apprentice to travel with her to bring herbs back at some point.
Her smile faded as Brightfrost continued to press the issue even after promising to remain here. The medicine cat didn´t have all of the answers, and just a twinge of frustration might have been noticeable as she gave a quiet sigh. She didn´t mean for it to come out, because she wouldn´t ever want Brightfrost to think she was annoying Autumneyes; but it just slipped through.
¨Jasminefur...¨ She murmured quietly as she looked over her herbs. ¨How many dogs do you think there were?¨ She knew she should have left the questions to the leader, but she decided she needed to ask this one in order to put Brightfrost at ease, as weird as it seemed.
Jasminefur blinked, his eyes widening a little as he turned to stare at the medicine cat, trying to picture the game and just how many dogs had been bounding around the camp, slaughtering his clanmates. There were seven or eight moments of silence, as Jasminefur just couldn´t summon a number--there were too many.
After allowing Jasminefur to stir and struggle on the quantity of dogs that had assaulted his clan, Autumneyes turned back to Brightfrost, staring with a grave seriousness that wasn´t usual to the medicine cat, usually sweet and with an unending positivity. ¨I will personally thrash any leader who is fool enough to ignore that many dogs, no matter what clan´s territory they are treading across.¨ Specklestar couldn´t simply wait to see what the dogs did, and Autumneyes would stress that as much as she needed to if she got the feeling the leader wouldn´t take it seriously enough--but the medicine cat doubted that would happen.

Brightfrost did her best to stand still; she didn’t want to make the medicine cat’s job any harder. She was already treating two cats- and possibly three, if Stoneheart had any injuries. And...more, if more of those dogs came onto ThunderClan territory. There were certainly more, Brightfrost thought, if Jasminefur was having this much trouble remembering exactly how many there were. That wasn’t a great sign; fulfilling her destiny was not going to be as easy as strolling over to WindClan camp.
She bowed her head respectfully towards Autumneyes, feeling glad that she sort of had someone on her side. She was relieved at the thought that something would be done about this- though what that ‘something’ was, she would have to find out. She followed her gaze to the herb storage. “I can get you some herbs when I’m able.” She wanted to make up for bothering Autumneyes, and herb collecting was one apprentice duty she never shied away from, even as a warrior. “Of course, I hope we don’t need them.”

Autumneyes gave a quiet mrrow of amusement as Brightfrost promised to get her some more herbs, taking a deep breath as the warrior added her hope that they wouldn´t be necessary. If there are dogs around...I don´t know if we can rely on not needing them. She thought grimly to herself, but as she saw the prickly and panicked tom-cat out of the corner of her eye, she decided to focus on the more lighthearted thing that Brightfrost had said.
¨Always bounding forward to get me whatever I need, hmm? Be careful, or I´ll start thinking you´d rather be ordered around as my apprentice than be a warrior.¨ Her voice was genuinely amused, but there was a quiet backdrop of worry as she wondered how the nearly silent WindClan cat was taking all of this. It felt weird to joke at a time like this, but she didn´t think that constantly repeating how bad the situation with the dogs was would be better for him.
¨Well, you both are looking better,¨ She murmured quietly as she glanced back and forth between the two. ¨It seems I´m going to have to fetch Specklestar myself. Hmm...¨ She didn´t know Stoneheart had gone for the leader. She gazed towards Jasminefur for several long moments, not revealing any of what she was thinking in her expression.
Jasminefur was going to need to talk this through with someone--if he just sat stewing on it, who knew what kind of trauma it would leave with him. Certainly, it would no matter what, but if he could talk through it, with at least a few cats who were willing to listen, maybe it would help him get through whatever had happened in WindClan´s territory.
Of course, she was assuming he was telling the truth. Autumneyes wasn´t in the business of distrusting based on clan rivalries, but she wondered how angry Specklestar would be if she questioned the tom herself without the leader there. Even if she would be more gentle with him than most any cat in the clan, she knew Specklestar would have words to say about it. Sighing with disappointment, looking down at her paws after an uncomfortable silence, she looked up at Brightfrost. ¨I´ll go fetch Specklestar, then.¨

Brightfrost followed the medicine cat’s gaze to Jasminefur. She wished she knew what she was thinking. She thought that Autumneyes was nice enough that she was probably worried about the traumatized WindClan warrior; if he was telling the truth, then he had been through an awful lot that hardly anyone would be able to cope with. But, there was always a possibility that she was having trouble trusting him. She had heard of Clans attacking each other’s medicine den; as sneaky and underhanded as that was, she had always been told that WindClan was willing to do anything to get one over on their enemies. ~ Stoneheart was fetching Specklestar, or trying to. The spotted brown cat with a speckled nose was rather indecisive about how to respond to this; Stoneheart was standing silently by as her leader paced and worked through the situation. “That many dogs...that’s really bad, isn’t it? It’s also kind of good, because if WindClan is gone then that’s more territory for us, right? And leafbare is coming and we need all the prey we can get. But the territory is filled with dogs- it isn’t safe. And...will we fall out of StarClan’s favor if we allow a Clan to die out?”
Every time Stoneheart prepared to speak, Specklestar interrupted with more queries. Eventually, she managed to get a word in edgewise. “StarClan gave you the power to lead. I am sure that you will make the right choice.”
Specklestar paused. “I’ll talk to that WindClan cat Brightfrost brought in. He probably has more information. I definitely need to know if Wrenstar really is dead- that seems important.”
Stoneheart just nodded. She watched as the leader went quickly to the medicine cat den, arriving just as Autumneyes was about to leave. Specklestar looked to Jasminefur. “Is he ready to talk?”

Autumneyes wanted to let out an exasperated sigh when the leader appeared in front of her just as she prepared to step out of the den. It would have been nice to give the cats a moment to breathe, but Specklestar needed answers--she couldn´t blame the leader for that.
She stepped deliberately close, leaving little distacne between them as her voice lowered to a hushed whisper. ¨He´s having a hard time. You have to be gentle with him, and I mean...beyond delicate. Forget where he comes from.¨ There was a glower in her eyes that betrayed some sort of knowledge she wasn´t telling the leader, as she stepped away and finally left Specklestar to enter at his pace.
Soon, Brightfrost was the cat who was going to lead them to their destiny--something that didn´t shock the medicine cat the first time it was revealed to her--but the medicine cat was suspicious that that destiny had much to do with these events and the cat sitting in the den, and if the leader made Jasminefur withdraw, afraid, that destiny was going to become trickier.
Of course, this was all on a hunch. But Autumneyes trusted her gut, and when Brightfrost made the decision to bring a WindClan cat back to camp, she had to trust the young, StarClan blessed warrior too.
Autumneyes turned to Quickbird as she left the leader to enter. She wondered what the father was thinking at the moment--he had no issue taking on the job carrying the kit, and he was lingering near the den even after depositing the kit in the den. Now that Specklestar was here, she wasn´t going to tell him to come into the den, but Fernkit looked terribly miserable pressed against one side of the den, desperately staring at Jasminefur as the leader approached.
She doesn´t need to hear all of this. Autumneyes decided, and even as Specklestar entered getting ready to question Jasminefur, she padded towards and picked up the kit without warning, leaving the den briefly to deposit Fernkit at Quickbird´s paws. She gave him a meaningful glance, trying to convey that she didn´t want him in the den without saying ´they´re going to be discussing the murder of their entire clan.´ ¨Quickbird, would you be willing to look after her for just a few more minutes? I´m so sorry to bother you more,¨ Her voice was pleading, but the medicine cat was guessing that the tom-cat was already feeling uncertain about leaving the kit alone, a parental instinct that he couldn´t turn off even given the scent the kit carried. She was hoping she was guessing correctly.
There was mumbling just outside the den that was barely out of reach of Jasminefur´s ears, and as his fur prickled nervously he turned to Brightfrost for just a moment, trying to take advantage of the near-empty den. ¨I´m a prisoner, then?¨ He hoarsely mewed as the medicine cat practically assigning Brightfrost to watching him replayed in his head. He wanted to do something about the dogs in WindClan, but it was starting to seem like he was going to be confined here without a prayer to StarClan to help a cat in his clan.

Quickbird stood. “Yes, yes- of course.” He was obviously very eager to get the poor kit out of this distressing situation. He gently guided Fernkit a few paces away. “Come, little one. I think I saw a bright red feather drifting around here somewhere; maybe you can help me catch it.” His mate was watching from the entrance of the nursery. She and Quickbird were excited first-time parents and were rather doting towards their litter, who were still too young to understand much of anything that went on outside their nest. ~ Specklestar looked reluctant at Autumneyes’ request. It was clear that he wasn’t exactly thrilled at the prospect of having a WindClan warrior in his camp. But he bowed his head in response; he was usually malleable to the medicine cats’ recommendations. He strode into the medicine cats’ den and looked at Jasminefur. Brightfrost was staying close by his side, wanting to show that she was taking full responsibility for this. And besides...she didn’t want to leave him alone to be interrogated about something so disturbing. Specklestar nodded to her before turning his full attention to Jasminefur.
“No, I suppose you aren’t a prisoner. If you want to leave, I can have a patrol of warriors escort you out of ThunderClan territory. But while you’re here, we do need to keep a close eye on you,” said Specklestar. “You’ve come here for a reason, right?”
