Mudwhisker ate the mouse in a few large bites, pushing the little bones away from him. "Well," he replied, "As of now there isn't much else for you to do. Would you rather gather some herbs with me or clean up the camp? Or, any other ideas?" He knew it was a low step to ask the she-cat what her job should do, but, who knows? Maybe she would actually have a decent idea.

Smallstep thought for a moment. Of the two predetermined options, gathering herbs sounded the best. Getting out into the forest was something she always enjoyed. Plus, lately she'd been having more and more thoughts of escaping. Not that she was very confident in actually having it work. However, she truly longed to hunt. It had been her favorite thing to do back in Oakclan. She recalled always asking to be given hunting patrol duty rather than patrolling duty. The warrior offered a small shrug. She didn't think that Mudwhisker would agree to it. "What about hunting?" she asked, looking away from him. Might as well ask and see what he says. "Otherwise I suppose gathering herbs will work," she added with a flick of her tail.

Mudwhisker's eyes narrowed in thought when Smallstep suggested hunting. After what seemed like a little too long, he sighed and said, "Fine. We'll do a little bit of both. I'll hunt with you for a little bit and then we will gather herbs. But, one wrong move and you'll feel my claws." He wasn't lying about hurting the she-cat. He was not about to let her manipulate his trust. His tail flicked as he turned around and stalked out of camp, not even waiting for Smallstep to follow.

Smallstep remained silent as she waited for his response. Her gaze returned to him when he agreed to it. Well, not agreed only to hunting, but to do a bit of both. A small smile spread across her face. However, it quickly disappeared when he threatened her. Well of course he would be hunting with her. She had no doubts that he would have let her hunt alone. She bit her tongue to hold back a snarky remark. A sigh escaped her as she watched him turn and begin leaving. She hesitated for a moment, then padded after him in silence.

Mudwhisker quickly brought his nose up to the air, trying to distinguish scents. Eventually, he found that of a robin. It would be a good catch if they managed. He quickly brought himself low to the ground, knowing Smallstep was probably doing the same. He lead the way closer to the bird and eventually it was in eyesight. It was plucking at a worm, so they would have to be quick. "I'll go on the other side so we can trap its wings." He quickly stalked to the other side of the bird, his paw steps making no sounds and his breathing quiet.

Smallstep followed behind Mudwhisker in silence. Her gaze shifted around several times throughout the forest. She couldn't remember the last time she had even hunted. She longed to go off on her own like the old days. However, she knew she wouldn't get away with it. Even if she didn't attempt to escape, she'd surely be punished. When Mudwhisker suddenly stopped and lowered to the ground, she nearly ran into him. She was about to question him, then the scent of the robin hit her. Nodding, she lowered herself to the ground beside the tom. "Okay," she replied in a hushed voice. Fearful to mess up the hunt and be punished, she waited for him to make the first move.

Mudwhisker waited for a few moments before raising his tail, the signal to charge. The deputy leaped from the bushes, his tail flying out behind him as he landed on one of the wings. The robin was incredibly large for, well, a robin. His claws dug in deep as he tried to maintain the bird.

Smallstep watched patiently on her side. Her eyes were locked onto the robin. When Mudwhisker pounced, it didn't take long for her to do the same. She landed just short of the robin. Quickly, she dug her claws into the other wing as the bird began thrashing about. She didn't wait for the deputy to instruct her on what to do next. Just because she hadn't hunted in some time didn't mean she forgot how to. Her eyes watched the bird, timing out a good time to strike. Just as it attempted to free its wings, the she-cat delivered a swift blow to its throat. She clamped her jaws tightly around its neck. After a few moments of the bird desperately trying to escape, its body fell limp.

Mudwhisker nodded in approval, a small smile creased on his face. He couldn't help be proud of the teamwork they had, even if it was with Smallstep. "We'll do another hunt and then off to find herbs, ok?" He said this like a question, but it was clear that is was an order. He quickly hid the robin within some brambles. "Tell me if you smell anything." Mudwhisker said as he once again sniffed the air.

Smallstep dropped the bird to the ground, its body falling with a thud. She looked back at Mudwhisker. When she saw him smile, it made her want to smile as well. However, she forced herself not to. She was uncertain how he would have reacted if she had smiled too. "Okay," she replied with a small nod. Her gaze followed him as he hid the robin. The she-cat raised her head higher into the air to see if she could catch the scent of anything. There was a faint scent of a mouse, but it seemed too old for the mouse to be anywhere nearby.

Mudwhisker eventually caught the scent of a squirrel. "Smallstep!" He whispered loudly. He dropped low to the ground, the grass just missing his nose. He stalked forward towards the squirrel, not issuing any commands to the she-cat. He instead wanted to see what she would do.
(Hey I'm open for timeskips btw. )

(Any particular time in mind? I can start having her get more daring with what she says and does? Aka she starts being openly flirty. ) Smallstep jumped a small bit when Mudwhisker suddenly broke the silence. She turned around and stared at him. When she was about to ask what he wanted, she stopped herself. Her eyes locked onto the squirrel not far from the deputy. She lowered herself to the ground and took careful pawsteps closer to him. Unsuspecting, the squirrel seemed to be looking for food of its own. She cast a glance at Mudwhisker. When he said nothing, she decided to do it herself. She returned her gaze to the squirrel and waited. The right moment eventually arrived. She suddenly charged forward towards the squirrel. It immediately bolted, not even looking to see what was giving chase. The squirrel began climbing a nearby tree. Convincing herself that catching it would help move along her plan and impress the tom, she flung herself into the air. Her claws scraped against the rough bark of the tree as she scrambled her way up. About halfway, she had managed to extend a paw and grab the squirrel by its bushy tail. The she-cat began pulling her paw back, still holding onto the squirrel. Despite it beginning to panic, she managed to get it close enough to deliver a deadly bite to the spine.

(HMmmmmhmhmhmh we could easily go as far as a moon, or just a few days.)
Mudwhisker watched with wide eyes as Smallstep scrambled up the tree and managed to kill the squirrel. Wow.... Wait, no. No, stop. I can't think like this. He shook his head to himself and walked over to the she-cat, hit face expressionless. "Nice... nice catch. Bury it and start looking for herbs. Now." His tail flicked non-stop, like he was contemplating something. Well, he was doing just that. All of the sudden, Smallstep had felt like a clanmate, not a prisoner, and he had no idea why.

(Whichever you prefer is fine by me. ^.^)
Smallstep couldn't help but feel full of herself. She fixed her gaze on Mudwhisker as he approached the tree that she still clung to. The squirrel fell to the ground with a thud as she released it. Then, she released her grip on the tree and landed on the soft grass with four paws. She was expecting to see surprise, perhaps even an impressed look from the deputy. However, he remained expressionless. Her whiskers twitched a tiny bit as she listened to his words. She offered a small nod, turning to pick up the squirrel. After deciding to bury it under the tree, she kicked dirt over the top of it. Even if she didn't impress him quite yet, she knew it was a start. This hunting trip would prove to be useful in aiding her plan. A small smirk crept across her maw as she thought about it. The she-cat quickly stopped smirking as she turned to face the tom. She began stalking after him. "So are we looking for any herbs in particular," she finally asked, breaking the silence.

(Hmmm, half a moon/ month?) Mudwhisker realized he had completely forgotten to ask Yarrowtail what herbs he would need. Mouse-brain! He told himself. "... Catmint and... I'm sure whatever else we find he will be grateful for." Yes, good. That was good. You sounded like you knew what you were saying! Well done Mudwhisker, well done. The deputy started to look around for any herbs. Soon enough, he found some marigold, catmint, and cobwebs. "Have you found anything?" He called out to Smallstep as he hobbled around with his front right paw wrapped in cobwebs. Kittensmew
