Is the totem lit up with any colors? If not, it probably won't work either at the moment for not at all.

My theory about only being able to talk to the totems on a sunny day was incorrect. I'm now pretty certain that you have to talk to them on the first day of a season.

I recall seeing symbols on the tops of the totems, could that have something to do with it?

Storm, I was able to talk to the totem on the fifth, so I guess it doesn't have to be on the first day of the season. But I was also able to talk to it on the first day as well I believe.

The totems actually only open/light up depending on the season!
The canyon ruins one opens in summer, the canyon cliffs one opens in spring, the swamp border west one opens in fall and the prairie border north one opens in winter! Hope this helps ^^

The speaking totems are seasonal, as Greatdane45 stated. I just found that they can be reused each year during their respective seasons, as I am in Summer on year 2 and was able to use the Summer totem again.

So, I just did the autumn totem in Swamp Border
First question was which gem was rarest, answer being ruby out of topaz, emerald, and ruby
Second was which bird was not native to this area, answer being magpies out of magpie, blue jay, and dove
Third being which seasons do blackberries grow in, answer being autumn out of autumn, spring, and summer

Just did the winter totem in Prairie Border North
First question was what is the name of the mystic colony’s shopkeeper, answer being Savannah out of Slip, Savannah, and Luna
Second question was which season can you buy a glow potion at the festival, answer being autumn out of winter, summer, and autumn
Third question being what is the Riverspan, answer being a large stone bridge out of an underground tunnel, a huge fallen tree, and a large stone bridge

Just did the spring totem in Canyon Cliffs
First question was what does marigold do when used, answer being heals you out of increases your colony’s power in an area, gives you a speed boost, and heals you
Second question was what does goldenseal do when used, answer being heals you out of makes you swim better, heals you, and causes an earthquake
Third question was which of the following is most valuable in mews, answer being catnip out of field mouse, catnip, and rock debris
