The world is pretty but after a while it gets bland, always the same seasons, the same raids, once you settle in it all can feel a bit empty.
You step out of your den to Coco waiting for you, he informs you "The Highland lake has been taken over by a pair of foxes, I recommend avoiding that territory and the ones that surround it or risk being attacked. However if you wish you could launch an attack to defeat them, destroying their dens will make sure they don't return."
Little events where a square of territory is occupied by fox(es), badger(s), a weasel, dog pack or some other animal and the only way to get rid of them would be to kill them and then break their dens. If you entered the squares directly around their occupied square you would be in constant danger of one or all of the group of animals attacking you, killing them would not free the territory and if you entered their occupied square they would spawn again.
The next day after a battle with the foxes you leave your den to Coco who looks pleased. "You defeated the foxes! Now that territory is safe for every cat, take these as a gift." He gifts you mews and maybe a skin themed of whatever you defeated.
Maybe different places would be more prone to certain animals like rivers being more prone to otters and stoats, prairies to dogs, thundering stones to having humans dump rubbish piles (which would act like dens) that attract rats.
Really to simplify it.
An animal occupies a square.
The squares around it have a high chance to spawn that animal.
To remove the animal you attack the occupied square and break the den.
