Chapter 1
Alright, here we go!
“GET UP TIME! GET UP TIME!” screeched the dorm parakeet at exactly 6 AM. Hybrids of big and small arose from their beds. All were Nekos, the cat hybrids. Some had curled up on their beds, just like the average housecat. Molly, an orange tabby hybrid, had tried to do this and had instead gotten herself into a tangled mess. She found her left leg..but it was trapped by her right. Her left arm was stuck behind her back, so she’d need to move to free it..
“AAAAAaaaah!”
..was the sound of the not-so-agile Molly toppling right off her bed. Thankfully, hers was the second of eight vertical rows, dug into the bark of a tree, so Molly didn’t feel any extreme pains. Still, someone falling off their bed was something to laugh at. The whole dorm exploded. “HAHAHAHAHAHA!” they all chanted. Molly covered her ears, but it didn’t stop. She could still hear them laughing.
”AHAHAHAHAhaha! Haahaaahaaaaa! HAHAHA! Haah!”
Molly couldn’t take it anymore. She promptly grabbed her bag, located at the back of the room, and dashed out, her hands still over her ears. She let out a low hiss as she trudged off to morning roll-call. How could anyone be so cruel, never mind an entire dorm? Hybrids of all animals were leaving their dorms now. Molly didn’t see them often, as the Nekos had the lowest dorm on the tree and were early risers. Those cats really held me up! she thought, anger running through her veins. Molly was not one to be late, so she rushed down the tree and took a seat on one of the neatly-carved stools below it. It wasn’t long before the whole area was crowded with hybrids, all talking to one another contentedly. Molly didn’t feel like talking due to what happened at her dorm room, and she quietly sat in her seat, waiting. After a few minutes, the bell rang for roll-call to begin.
Ms Cacao was up front, beaming as usual. Everyone loved the principal, as the rabbit hybrid never ceased to make you smile. She could make a gloomy day into a great one in minutes, and that effect would last at least for a while. Aging had begun to take its course in her, but that didn’t seem to affect her mood. Molly wondered if anything could take away that woman’s eternal smile.
”Hello, students of Yoyur! Are you ready for a brand new day?” Ms Cacao said in her sweet, soothing voice. Everyone declared in perfect unison, “Yes, Ms Cacao!” Molly could swear that she saw the woman’s already huge smile growing bigger at that moment.
”That’s great, everyone! Now, just to check..Flo?”
”Here, Miss.” Flo called out enthusiastically.
”Leif?”
”Here!” said Leif.
Yoyur has a great many students, and Molly was always glad when roll-call ended. The same thing that came to Molly’s mind every day after roll-call then arrived; If Ms Cacao wasn’t doing it, then I’d be outta here!
Yes, roll-call would be an even bigger bore if Ms Cacao wasn’t there.
Molly knew, however, that there was no time to think about this now. It was the 7-9 AM free period, and Molly had promised she’d meet up with Leif. She’d have to do it now. It was no surprise to Molly to see that he was preparing another “tribal breakfast”. He’d already stuck the fresh rabbit meat on the stick, and he was preparing to light the fire. When he saw Molly coming up, he gave her a smile and a wave.
”Hey, Molly! Come and help me with this breakfast, would you?” It was most obviously the rabbit meat.
“Sure.” Molly replied. Although he was strange, Molly was always happy to help Leif.
Leif is a bear cub hybrid with a cute little bobtail. He has a lot of thick brown fur on places of his body, including his head. He pins back his hair with a dead leaf. Always a dead leaf. The rest, he says, he shaves off. After classes, Leif gets decked out in tribal gear and resumes living “tribal style”. That is what he’s doing right now, and Leif rather enjoys it.
Molly stacked on the last piece of firewood, and she couldn’t help purring. Leif struck a match and expertly lit the fire. The rabbit meat began to cook at a steady pace, and the two friends gave each other high fives.
”So, Molly, you’ve seemed a little out of it today, so far.” Leif exclaimed with a concerned look on his face. “Is something up?”
”Just a little event back in my dorm. I’ll get over it in no time.” Molly mewed with a laugh.
”Good to hear!” Leif said, smiling. He was twisting the rabbit meat around to make sure that every little particle was cooked. Leif was a true master at tribe-cooking. It was impossible to find anyone like him, Molly knew that. She purred and opened up her phone. She then opened up the app for TailWag, the prime social media for hybrids. It was practically the equivalent of Facebook, and everyone in the school that was over 13 had an account. Molly laughed at some funny dog pictures while she waited for Leif’s call. It only took him five minutes to finish, remarkably.
”Come get this food, Molly; it’s ready!”
The two friends chowed down on their breakfast that they shared. It was delicious, and they both very much enjoyed it. In the span of a minute, the two carnivores had devoured the entire rabbit.
”That was a good one, Leif! We should eat that again some other time.”
It was when Molly said that when the bell for first period rang. Molly and Leif waved each other goodbye and they both parted ways. Stopping at the tree, Molly checked her timetable. The first subject of the Monday was Hybrid English. Nothing special, she thought, and she manoeuvred up the spiral pathway to English class.
First chapter done! This was mostly just to introduce the characters; Chapter 2 will be much more eventful!
(And, yes, it is long.)
