Crowfang stepped back into the den and immediately rushed to her kits. They had started crying. Halfpaw walked in. "Should I get fresh moss or herbs?" Crowfang thought for a moment. "Yes. Get fresh moss for Dawnwhisker's nest. As soon as you have that, get more as I will be moving my kits out of the den today. I'm afraid that they will get sick if they stay here any longer." Halfpaw nodded and padded outside. She glanced at Robinflight's kits and went to gather moss. Crowfang thought for awhile about her kits, Dawnwhisker, becoming a warrior again, and then about Sweetstar's strange words. Who would be deputy but wasn't available now? Her first thought was Robinflight. The she-cat had proven herself many times to the clan and would make an excellent deputy. But then again, Sweetstar never came to talk to Crowfang about who she thinks should be deputy. It was strange, but Crowfang turned her thoughts back to Dawnwhisker as Halfpaw came back with moss and began to fix Dawnwhisker's nest.

Robinflight helped Crowfang move Frostkit, Ripplekit, Leafkit, and Fernkit to the other den. She placed the last kit, Fernkit, in the nest with her brother and sisters. Maplekit and Nightkit were playing quietly in their nest, just like they were told to earlier. Robinflight turned to Crowfang and offered to watch the kits. She also said "Sweetstar's words have me confused." Robinflight thought Crowfang would be the next deputy. She broke the codes, yes, but she was skilled as a warrior and would make a great leader. "Your thoughts?"

Crowfang licked each kit before responding. "My thought was you. Addertalon never seemed to have the ambition to become leader, though Sweetstar may die after he joins the elders. And while there are other capable warriors, few have shown the same ambition and loyalty to the clan and their clanmates that you have. You have served Thunderclan as a warrior since I was halfway through my apprenticeship, you have helped every clanmate, shown to be an excellent mother, and even stuck by a clanmate who was punished, even going against the leader. Not many clan cats can say they have done all that." She flicked her tail. "If I must admit, I'm a bit jealous. Ever since I was a kit, I wanted to be leader of Thunderclan but since I have done so wrong, I have to give that up and support the next deputy." Halfpaw dropped a pile of herbs outside the den and began to sort them. "I'm going to sort leaves out here and take them in when I'm done so I spend less time near Dawnwhisker for now." Crowfang nodded in approval and glanced at the mound of fur inside the den. "But I'm more worried about Dawnwhisker and the yellowcough. No clan has reported this for many many seasons, since before I was born. There's not much to do except hope she's lucky enough to recover.....if not....well I just hope we don't have another outbreak. The last time this hit, every clan lost half their warriors. Even kits died."

Robinflight didn't respond to Crowfang's response to her being a deputy. Yes, she would love to be deputy, and after those reasons Crowfang pointed out, she felt a small burst of confidence. Robinflight reminded herself quickly that she may not be the next deputy, but if she was asked to fill the duty, she wouldn't deny. "Dawnwhisker is strong." Robinflight turned back to Crowfang, "She can make it. It doesn't mean she will, but she can..." Robinflight trailed off and went to the kits. She quietly talked to Maplekit and Nightkit, who were explaining their goals as apprentices.
